Where our news comes from
We are an aggregator before we are anything else. We read other people’s journalism, count how many outlets are carrying a story, and link back. We never republish it.
What we take, and what we do not
- We take
- The headline, a short excerpt as published in the outlet’s own feed, the link, and the time we saw it.
- We never take
- The article body, the outlet’s photography, or anything behind a paywall.
- We always give
- A visible credit to the outlet and a link that goes to their page, not to a copy of it.
- Link treatment
- Editorial links to publishers are ordinary outbound links. They are never affiliate links, and no publisher pays to be cited.
How a story becomes a page here
Feeds are polled on a schedule, with the rate limit each outlet publishes respected. Items covering the same event are collapsed into one story, and the number of independent outlets carrying it is what you see as the source count.
Corroboration matters more than speed. A single outlet reporting something is a report; we would rather be an hour later and be able to tell you that nine newsrooms have it.
The Vietnamese edition
The Vietnamese edition reads VnExpress, Dân Trí, VietnamNet, Tuổi Trẻ and GenK across their general, technology and business feeds.
That publisher set follows docbao, the open-source Vietnamese news crawler by Hải Lộc (github.com/hailoc12/docbao). We credit it because we took the shape of the source list from it rather than working it out ourselves. Every feed was checked to be returning items before it was added; outlets whose feed addresses did not respond were left out rather than listed and left broken.
The global edition
The global edition reads Hacker News, Google News, Reddit, the GitHub Blog and Product Hunt, weighted by how reliable each has proven as an early signal rather than by how much it publishes.
Publishers: adding or removing your outlet
If you publish a feed and would like us to read it, or would like us to stop, write to the newsroom address on the contact page and we will act on it. A removal request is honoured without argument and without asking why.
If you believe we have taken more of your work than the excerpt your own feed publishes, tell us and we will correct it the same day.
