Pooh Bear lives in the forest under the name of Sanders, driven primarily by an appetite for honey. To reach a nest at the top of a tall oak tree, he floats up on a blue balloon, pretending to be a small black cloud while singing cloud songs. When the bees grow suspicious and the wind fails to move him closer, Christopher Robin shoots the balloon with his air-gun to bring Pooh gently back down.
Visiting Rabbit for eleven o'clock refreshment leads Pooh to eat both honey and condensed milk until he swells beyond the dimensions of the front door. Stuck half in and half out of the burrow, he must wait a full week without food until he thins down enough to be pulled free. Christopher Robin reads comforting books to Pooh's back end while Rabbit uses Pooh's front paws as a towel rack until the grand tug succeeds.
Circular tracks in the winter snow convince Pooh and Piglet that they are tracking a hostile Woozle around a small spinney of larch trees. As they walk in circles, additional sets of prints join the trail, mounting their fear that several Wizzle-Woozles have joined the hunt. Christopher Robin watches from the branches of an oak tree until he points out that the two friends have simply been following their own footsteps around the copse.
Eeyore stands by the thistle-patch feeling gloomy because his tail has vanished from behind him. Pooh promises to locate the missing appendage and searches the forest until he reaches Owl's residence at the Chestnut Tree. There he discovers Owl using Eeyore's tail as an ornamental bell-rope, having found it hanging over a bush. Christopher Robin nails the tail back onto Eeyore, who celebrates by executing joy-flips in the gorse.
Pooh and Piglet set a trap for an imaginary Heffalump by digging a deep pit and baiting it with a jar of honey. Unable to resist his own lure, Pooh sneaks out in the dark and gets his head firmly wedged inside the honey pot while licking the bottom. Piglet discovers the pot-headed creature thrashing in the pit, panics at the sight of the terrifying monster, and runs to fetch Christopher Robin, who recognizes Pooh immediately.
Nobody remembers Eeyore's birthday, leaving the old grey donkey thoroughly miserable by his stream. Pooh decides to give him a jar of honey, but eats it on the way and presents the empty pot as a useful vessel to keep things in. Piglet rushes to give Eeyore a red balloon, accidentally pops it on the way, but Eeyore finds immense joy putting the burst balloon in and out of the empty jar.
The arrival of Kanga and Roo upsets Rabbit, who devises a plan to kidnap Roo and force Kanga to leave the Hundred Acre Wood. Piglet jumps into Kanga's pouch as a substitute while Pooh distracts her, but Kanga notices the switch immediately and gives Piglet a stern soap bath. The plot dissolves when everyone realizes Kanga is friendly, Roo becomes Piglet's companion, and Kanga remains in the forest.
Christopher Robin gathers all the forest animals for an "expotition" to discover the North Pole, though none of them know what a pole looks like. When Baby Roo falls into the river during lunch, Pooh retrieves him using a long wooden stick he finds near the bank. Christopher Robin declares that stick to be the actual North Pole, planting it in the ground with a sign marking Pooh's discovery.
Heavy autumn rain floods Piglet's home, trapping him inside with water rising to his windowsill. He writes a message in a bottle asking for help and casts it into the floodwaters, where Pooh discovers it floating near his own tree. Lacking a boat, Pooh uses a giant earthenware jar as a vessel, sails to Christopher Robin's house, and together they convert an umbrella into a seaworthy craft to rescue Piglet.
Christopher Robin hosts a grand hero's party in the forest to honor Pooh for his bravery during the flood. Every animal attends, and Eeyore delivers a lengthy speech assuming the gathering is in honor of his own recent cheerfulness. Christopher Robin presents Pooh with a special pencil case containing soft pencils, an eraser, and a ruler, marking a gentle farewell to their initial adventures.
