Walking through St. Petersburg during the glowing dusk of a white night, an unnamed dreamer encounters Nastenka weeping against a canal railing. After stepping in to shield her from an aggressive drunkard, he secures her trust through his gentle manner. She agrees to meet him again on the condition that he never falls in love with her.
Nastenka listens as the dreamer confesses his habitual escape into elaborate imaginary worlds, where he crafts grand romances to survive his empty daily routine. Realizing his isolation, Nastenka offers genuine friendship to help tie his spirit back to actual human existence. Their shared intimacy deepens as they walk beside the dark water.
Nastenka reveals her upbringing under her strict blind grandmother, who literally pinned Nastenka's skirt to her own to prevent her wandering. Her life changed when a poor lodger moved into their home, won her heart, and promised to return to marry her after one year in Moscow. That year has now passed, leaving her waiting at the river edge every evening.
As rain falls over the St. Petersburg canals, Nastenka despairs over the lodger's continued silence. The dreamer conceals his intense romantic devotion to comfort her, drafting a letter on her behalf to prompt her lover's return. Selfless devotion competes with his growing realization that he cannot remain merely a platonic protector.
Believing her original lover has abandoned her, Nastenka turns to the dreamer and offers her heart to him instead. Their sudden plans for a shared future vanish moments later when the lodger unexpectedly appears on the street. Nastenka breaks away to embrace her former suitor, leaving the dreamer alone in the dark.
A letter arrives the next morning in which Nastenka begs forgiveness and expresses everlasting gratitude for the dreamer's kindness. Returning to his dim Petersburg apartment, the dreamer harbors no bitterness toward her. He treasures a fleeting moment of genuine connection as a blessing sufficient for an entire lifetime.
