Mats Jonsson walks the thawing town streets of Bastugatan, acutely aware that book learning cannot erase his identity as a farmer. I.

Through rigorous discipline, Mats reorganizes Gebhardt's trade business and masterly accounts, earning a partnership and respect across town. He becomes engaged to Lova, the firm's practical mamsell, adopting tailored clothes and a solid gold ring that symbolize his new status. Yet when Karl-Anton brings news from Tavle—detailing Ejnar’s financial collapse, the departure of Gam-Erik for America, and Anna-Greta’s solitary return to her mother—Mats discovers that material security cannot extinguish his unresolved connection to his homeland.

III.

True redemption lies in returning to and restoring the soil.

Returning to Tavle after Grubben's fatal downfall and a devastating sawmill fire, Mats purchases his father's abandoned homestead. Breaking his engagement with Lova, who declined rural life, he rallies the displaced villagers to cultivate the neglected land and drain the haunting Vintermyren bog. He establishes a village chapel and a care clinic where Anna-Greta can work, guiding even a humbled Ejnar back to honest labor. Sowing seeds in the poor soil, Mats fulfills his father's quiet legacy.
