Sir Huldbrand seeks refuge in a secluded riverside cottage after braving a supernatural forest filled with phantom shapes. There he meets Undine, a capricious girl whose foster parents rescued her from the water after losing their own infant. Undine delights in provoking her caretakers and tantalizing the visiting knight with her wild, uncanny temper before fleeing into the stormy night. Trapped together by swelling floodwaters, Huldbrand recounts how the arrogant noblewoman Bertalda sent him into the haunted woods on a trivial dare. Father Heilmann survives a turbulent river crossing and arrives at the isolated hut to solemnize the marriage of Huldbrand and Undine. The wedding transforms the bride immediately from an erratic spirit into a gentle, dutiful woman. By taking a mortal husband, the water nymph earns a human soul, inheriting both the capacity for selfless devotion and the painful burden of mortality.

Human vanity turns generous truths into bitter resentment

Returning to the city, Undine warmly welcomes Bertalda despite knowing the knight once courted her. At a festive banquet, Undine uses music to reveal that Bertalda is actually the humble fisherman's stolen child. Spurning her true parents with furious disdain, Bertalda accuses Undine of witchcraft and loses her high status among the nobility. Undine displays supernatural grace by forgiving Bertalda's insults and inviting the ruined noblewoman to live with them at Castle Ringstetten.

Unfaithfulness to pure love invites inevitable destruction

Riding down the Danube, Huldbrand grows resentful of his wife's water-spirit kin and casts her out in a fit of rage, forcing her return to the watery abyss. Ignoring mystical dreams and priest warnings, the knight soon prepares to marry Bertalda. Opening the sealed castle well for cosmetic water unleashes the weeping Undine, who must enforce elemental law upon her unfaithful groom. Her fatal embrace takes his life on the wedding night, leaving a perpetual stream flowing around his final resting place.
