Division of the Subject

Human destiny rests on three conditions: what a person is, what a person has, and what a person represents in the eyes of others. Inner qualities like health, intelligence, and temperament shape consciousness directly, while riches and social standing act only indirectly. External fortune can be lost or replaced, but personal character remains constant from birth to death. The objective world matters far less than the subjective mirror through which an individual experiences it.

Personality, or What a Man Is

Health and sound constitution form the foundation of a cheerful temperament, which outweighs all riches. An active intellect wards off boredom, the twin tormentor of human life alongside physical pain. A rich inner life enables a person to enjoy quiet solitude without needing external distractions, noisy company, or ruinous luxuries. Fools suffer endlessly from their own minds, whereas wise individuals carry their happiness entirely within themselves.

Property, or What a Man Has

Possessions satisfy natural needs, yet extra wealth creates artificial desires that grow larger with every addition. Moderate means protect an individual from hardship and compulsory labor, offering independence from unwanted obligations. Accumulating excessive riches brings burden rather than peace, as managing property demands endless care. Wealth functions like sea water; the more consumed, the greater the thirst becomes.

Position, or a Man's Place in the Estimation of Others

Public opinion exists only in the minds of spectator crowds, having no direct reality within an individual's personal awareness. Excessive concern for reputation, rank, and social honor forces a person into perpetual anxiety and slavish conformity. Pride stems from a firm inner conviction of one's own worth, whereas vanity hungers for applause from strangers. True tranquility requires shaking off the absurd obsession with how one appears to the world.
