Mole abandons his spring cleaning to venture out into the warm spring air. Reaching the river, he meets the Water Rat, who introduces him to the delights of boating and life along the water. Ratty shares a picnic basket and welcomes Mole into his gentle world of riverbank society. Mole experiences the joy of water for the first time, learning that life beside the river holds endless wonder.
Mole and Rat visit Toad Hall, where the wealthy and impulsive Mr. Toad convinces them to join him on a journey in a canary-yellow gypsy caravan. The trip proceeds pleasantly until a roaring motor-car speeds past, scaring their horse and wrecking the caravan in a ditch. While Ratty fumes over the destroyed cart, Toad becomes instantly obsessed with automobiles. Toad forgets the wrecked caravan entirely, consumed by his new passion for motor-cars.
Driven by curiosity to meet the reclusive Mr. Badger, Mole slips into the dark and intimidating Wild Wood alone during winter. The rustling shadows, whispering trees, and menacing faces intimidate him until he collapses in terror beneath a hollow tree. Ratty tracks Mole down, comforting his frightened friend amid a sudden snowfall. While resting, Mole accidentally bumps his shin against a hard object hidden under the snow, which turns out to be a solid iron scraper.
Finding an iron scraper and a door mat beneath the snow, Rat and Mole knock on the door of Mr. Badger's sprawling underground home. Badger warmly welcomes the freezing travelers into his cozy kitchen, serving them a hearty hot meal before a roaring fire. They discuss Toad's dangerous obsession with fast cars and his mounting debts. Badger promises that once spring arrives, he will join forces with Rat and Mole to curb Toad's reckless behavior.
Walking back through the winter night, Mole suddenly catches a faint scent that awakens intense memories of his long-abandoned subterranean home. Though Ratty initially rushes ahead, he realizes Mole's deep distress and lovingly accompanies him back to the humble burrow. Ratty helps clean up the dusty dwelling and buys provisions for a festive meal. A choir of young field mice arrives to sing Christmas carols, filling Mole's heart with warmth and contentment.
Spring arrives, and Badger leads Mole and Rat to Toad Hall to confront Toad about his self-destructive driving habit. After Toad stubbornly refuses to reform, the friends lock him in his bedroom under constant supervision to break his addiction. Toad feigns illness and cleverly tricks the sympathetic Water Rat into leaving the room to fetch a doctor. Left unattended, Toad escapes out the window, leaves a trail of deceit, and steals a motor-car from an inn courtyard.
Portly, the young otter pup, strays from home, prompting Ratty and Mole to row upstream under a summer night sky to search for him. Near dawn, a magical music draws them to a secluded island where they behold the divine presence of the goat-horned god Pan sheltering the sleeping child. Overcome with awe and reverence, the friends experience profound peace before the vision fades. Pan gifts them sweet forgetfulness, leaving only a lingering sense of holy wonder.
Stolen motor-car in hand, Toad experiences a brief moment of thrilling speed before police arrest him for grand theft and impudence. A stern magistrate sentences Toad to twenty years in the darkest dungeon of a medieval castle. Despairing in his grim cell, Toad wins the sympathy of the gaoler's daughter, who devises a plan for his escape. She disguises Toad as her aunt, a stout washerwoman, allowing him to walk right past the castle guards.
Autumn settles over the riverbank, and migrating birds inspire a restless longing in the creatures preparing for winter. A seafaring rat arrives and enthralls Water Rat with vivid tales of distant southern ports, sparkling seas, and endless adventure. Spellbound, Ratty packs his satchel and prepares to abandon his river home forever. Mole catches him just in time, physically restraining his friend and gently nursing him back to sanity with poetry and patience.
Wandering the countryside in his washerwoman disguise, Toad hitches a ride on a canal horse-barge. When the bargewoman discovers Toad cannot actually wash clothes, she mocks him, throwing him into the canal. Enraged, Toad steals her barge horse and later sells it to a gypsy for cash and a hot meal. He hitches a ride in a motor-car, but his pride overcomes him, leading him to take the wheel and crash the car into a pond.
Escaping the pond, Toad stumbles into the home of Water Rat, who informs him of terrible news. During Toad's imprisonment, the wild wooders—stoats and weasels—invaded Toad Hall, armed with clubs and guns, and took over the grand estate. Toad tries to storm his home alone, but the guards easily repulse him. Badger arrives with a secret strategy, revealing an underground passage built by Toad's father that leads directly into the heart of Toad Hall.
Armed to the teeth, Badger, Rat, Mole, and Toad creep through the secret tunnel during a wild banquet held by the occupying weasels. Bursting into the dining hall with mighty roars, the four friends scatter the terrified invaders and reclaim Toad Hall. Badger insists that Toad host a formal party to celebrate the victory. Chastened by his friends' wisdom, Toad sings no boastful songs, showing genuine humility and emerging as a changed creature.
