Seeing his filthy reflection beside her purity sparks a sudden awareness of his own grime. Panic drives him across the moors and down a steep crag into Vendale.
Exhausted and feverish from his escape, Tom climbs down into the cool mountain stream of Vendale to wash away his dirt. As he slips into the water, his mortal body dies of fever, but fairyland grants him a second life. He sheds his soot and transforms into a tiny, gill-bearing water-baby three inches long. The river becomes a sanctuary where physical washing signals a spiritual fresh start.
Underwater life demands observation and empathy rather than impulse. Tom explores the stream, interacting with caddis-flies, trout, and grand salmon while learning the delicate balance of the aquatic ecosystem. His selfish antics occasionally annoy the river dwellers, showing that physical transformation does not automatically erase bad habits. Tom follows the river downstream to the wide ocean, where he meets the fairy authorities of the underwater world. Mrs. Bedonebyasyoudid enforces strict retributive justice, rewarding good deeds and punishing misbehaviour with natural consequences. Her twin, Mrs. Doasyouwouldbedoneby, offers unconditional love and comforting affection. Together they teach that divine law combines unyielding accountability with gentle mercy.
Living among other water-babies on St. Brandan's Isle, Tom succumbs to temptation and steals hidden candies. His deceitful eating causes hard, prickly bumps to sprout all over his skin, making his secret sin visible to everyone. Only when he confesses his fault to Mrs. Bedonebyasyoudid does the prickliness vanish. Moral purity requires transparent honesty rather than hidden self-gratification.
True spiritual progress requires more than avoiding personal sin; it demands active virtue. To earn his full humanity and reunite with Ellie, Tom must embark on a difficult quest to help his former abuser, Grimes. Mother Carey, the supreme force of creation at Peacepool, guides him toward self-sacrifice rather than revenge. Character is proved when one seeks the redemption of an enemy.
Tom journeys to the icy waste of the Other-end-of-Nowhere, passing through the Shiny Wall and desolate ocean reaches. He meets the solitary Gairfowl and learns the cost of failing to adapt to a changing world. At last he finds Grimes trapped inside a soot-clogged chimney top, suffering the exact torment he inflicted on others. Tom offers forgiveness and cold water, loosening the soot of Grimes's stubborn pride.
Grimes repents after receiving mercy from the boy he mistreated, opening his heart to tears that wash away his chimney. Having accomplished his unselfish mission, Tom emerges from the water as a fully grown man and a master of science. He unites with Ellie, bridging the gap between earth and spirit. A soul matures only after overcoming selfishness through active love.
