He appoints Xodar to lead the First Born and establishes his son Carthoris as regent of Helium. Accompanied only by his hound Woola, Carter stalks Thurid to uncover the black prince's hidden conspiracy.

Carter and Woola navigate dark water channels beneath the Otz Mountains in pursuit of Thurid and two Holy Therns. Blind river forks test Carter's resolve until a discarded sorapus fruit husk confirms the correct passage. When violent rapids block further upstream progress, a lucky collision in a dark eddy reveals an abandoned river craft. Following this clue allows Carter to regain the trail of the conspirators deep within the planet's core.

UNDER THE MOUNTAINS

Ambushed in a narrow corridor, Carter survives a dirty ankle-tripping maneuver through Woola's fierce intervention against two therns. Carter strips the yellow wig and golden diadem from the slain Holy Thern Lakor to forge a convincing disguise. Wearing these revered trappings, he safely navigates a catwalk spanning a chamber packed with prehistoric reptiles guarded by radium illumination. The disguise enables him to bypass deadly obstacles guarding the base of the Sun Temple shaft.

Tracking the abductors to Matai Shang's hidden mountain fortress, Carter walks into a deliberate ambush set within the outer court. From a high balcony, Matai Shang and Thurid mockingly display the fettered Dejah Thoris and Thuvia while threatening Carter with slow execution. Rather than begging for mercy, Carter removes his stolen thern wig and diadem, trampling and spitting upon the sacred relics before the horrified priests. This calculated act of contempt shatters the solemnity of his captors right before he is hurled off the tower.

Carter survives his fall from the mountain tower when his harness snags on a carved stone outcrop. Securing a second flier and retrieving Woola, he pursues Matai Shang and Thurid toward the tropical realm of Kaol using a destination compass. When Thurid's gunnery shreds his airship's buoyancy tanks over an equatorial forest, Carter plays dead to halt further bombardment. Landing safely in the wilderness, he prepares to enter a hostile, isolated nation where off-worlders face immediate death.

ON THE KAOLIAN ROAD

Bordering the equatorial jungle of Kaol, Carter discovers a hidden line of green warriors preparing to ambush the red troops of the local jeddak. Dashing into the fray with immense leaps, Carter slays the ambushers and stands shoulder to shoulder with the red soldiers of Kaol. His extraordinary swordsmanship catches the eye of Jeddak Kulan Tith, who commends him under the warrior name Dotar Sojat. Winning the respect of the Kaolian monarch provides Carter with direct access to the royal palace.

A HERO IN KAOL

Genuine gratitude creates alliances that transcend fanatical religious dogma.

In Kulan Tith's audience hall, Thurid exposes Carter by wiping away his disguising red skin paint to reveal his true complexion. Although Kulan Tith orders Carter's immediate execution for sacrilege, Thuvan Dihn of Ptarth leaps to his defense with a drawn blade. Thuvan Dihn honors Carter for rescuing his daughter Thuvia from the Valley Dor, refusing to stand by while his benefactor is murdered. This bold intervention halts the execution and unites two royal houses against the deceptive Holy Therns.

NEW ALLIES

Harsh arctic frontiers yield passage only to observant trackers.

Carter and Thuvan Dihn fly north across the globe until their vessel crashes into the towering arctic ice-barrier. Journeying on foot through freezing temperatures, they fend off ferocious six-limbed white apts that hunt in the glacial gloom. Notice of a golden collar around a giant apt reveals that human masters live beyond the ice wall. Following the beast's trail leads the travelers directly to the foul-smelling entrance of the Carrion Caves, the sole subterranean pass through the barrier.

THROUGH THE CARRION CAVES

Strategic disguise opens the sealed cities of an isolated civilization.

Emerging from the Carrion Caves, Carter and Thuvan Dihn rescue Prince Talu of Marentina from a band of yellow Okarian assassins. Talu welcomes them to his glass-domed, climate-controlled city and offers his aid to overthrow his tyrannical uncle, Salensus Oll. A skilled palace barber dyes their skin yellow and fits them with thick black beards and Okarian warrior harness. Equipped with ground fliers and false identities from the city of Illall, they set out for the capital city of Kadabra.

WITH THE YELLOW MEN

Overly cautious bureaucracy can inadvertently derail a clandestine rescue plan.

Reaching Kadabra, Carter and Thuvan Dihn present themselves to Sorav, commander of the palace guard, to seek enlistment. Although Sorav accepts their credentials without suspicion, palace protocol requires all new recruits to be segregated in a locked tower. This precaution prevents fatal dueling among guardsmen but effectively turns the disguised heroes into captives. Isolated from the main palace corridors, Carter finds his immediate plans to locate and liberate Dejah Thoris completely stalled.

IN DURANCE

Total vulnerability turns into strength when love is reaffirmed.

Brought before Salensus Oll, Carter watches the ruler declare his intention to forcibly marry Dejah Thoris within ten days. Thurid suddenly steps forward and tears off Carter's false beard, exposing his identity to the entire Okarian court. Before guards overpower him, Carter embraces Dejah Thoris, clearing up her earlier confusion over his disguise and reuniting their hearts. Stripped of his weapons, Carter is cast into the subterranean Pit of Plenty to suffer slow starvation under the tyrant's sentence.

THE PIT OF PLENTY

Hidden passages provide escape when public avenues are sealed.

Trapped in total darkness in the pit, Carter discovers a hanging cord tied with encoded warning knots. He climbs the line just as a ravenous apt is lowered into the pit to devour him on Salensus Oll's command. Entering a narrow tunnel, Carter overhears the black dator Thurid bribing the palace scientist Solan to deactivate the city's powerful magnetic defense grid. Learning the location of the master magnet switch gives Carter a vital objective to save incoming rescue fleets.

“FOLLOW THE ROPE”

Rescuing fellow captives transforms a solitary escape into a force.

Carter breaks into a palace armory, slays three guards, and cuts the heavy chains binding a group of red Martian prisoners. Among the captives are Tardos Mors and Mors Kajak, the lost rulers of Helium. Armed with weapons from the armory racks, the thirteen freed warriors make a heroic stand against surging waves of Okarian guardsmen. Carter holds the narrow spiral doorway single-handedly while his companions secure the upper levels of the ancient watchtower.

THE MAGNET SWITCH

Decisive action against a tyrant can instantly collapse an empire.

Carter destroys the master magnet control switch, disabling Okabra's defensive grid and allowing allied airships to enter the city safely. Infiltrating the royal nuptial chamber, he strikes down Salensus Oll upon the throne steps right before the wedding vows are uttered. As fifty Okarian nobles attack him, Dejah Thoris sings the battle anthem of Helium from behind his shoulder to inspire his blade. Carter holds the throne platform against overwhelming odds, ending the tyrant's reign in a single decisive stroke.

THE TIDE OF BATTLE

Methodical tracking turns a desperate chase into victory.

Thurid snatches Dejah Thoris during the chaos following Salensus Oll's death, forcing Carter to give chase through subterranean secret exits. Guided by a discarded piece of fur trapped in a doorway, Carter finds a dressing room filled with heavy outdoor apparel. Outfitted in warm orluk-skin coats and boots, he follows the abductors' fresh footprints through deep arctic snowdrifts. He overtakes Thurid and Matai Shang near a mountain cave just as the villains prepare to board a getaway airship.

REWARDS

Overthrowing tyranny restores justice across multiple worlds.

Returning to Kadabra with Dejah Thoris, Carter uses the palace sunray controls to force the remaining Okarian loyalists into immediate submission. Prince Talu ascends the throne as the new Jeddak of Jeddaks, bringing peace and freedom to the yellow race of Okar. Searching parties liberate Thuvan Dihn and Thuvia from the underground dungeons, reuniting families split by war. Joined by Carthoris, Tars Tarkas, and Xodar, Carter celebrates a complete victory that permanently reshapes the political landscape of Barsoom.
