Dante awakens halfway through life straying into a dark, terrifying forest after losing the straight path. Seeking safety up a sunlit mountain, three fierce beasts block his climb. The ancient Roman poet Virgil appears to rescue him from total despair. Virgil promises to lead Dante through an eternal realm of punishment to reveal the true nature of evil.
Fear of his own unworthiness halts Dante before the daunting descent begins. He questions why he, unlike Aeneas or Saint Paul, should be granted passage through the underworld. Virgil reassures him by revealing that Beatrice descended from Heaven to Limbo to request this salvation. Inspired by Beatrice's divine love and mercy, Dante renews his courage and steps forward.
An inscription over the doorway warns all who enter to abandon every hope. Just inside, uncommitted souls who lived without praise or blame are tormented alongside neutral angels by swarming wasps. Beyond them, the grim boatman Charon ferries damned souls across the dark river Acheron. Dante faints from terror as a red flash shakes the shadowy shore.
Awakening in Limbo, Dante finds the first circle filled with virtuous unbaptized souls who suffer only unfulfilled longing without physical pain. Ancient poets Homer, Horace, Ovid, and Lucan welcome Virgil back to their midst and include Dante in their circle. Within a noble castle, great philosophers and heroes like Aristotle, Plato, and Hector dwell in quiet dignity.
The monstrous judge Minos coils his tail to assign each soul to its proper circle of torment. In the second circle, lustful souls are endlessly whipped about by a violent, howling tempest. Dante speaks with Francesca da Rimini, who recounts how reading a romance of Lancelot led her and Paolo into adultery and death. Overcome with pity for their eternal agony, Dante swoons.
Heavy, filthy rain and freezing hail deluge the gluttons in the third circle. The three-headed hound Cerberus barks viciously over the mud-soaked souls and flays them with his claws. The Florentine soul Ciacco rises from the mire to converse with Dante about political turmoil in their shared hometown. Before sinking back into the slush, Ciacco foretells civil war and exile for Dante's faction.
Plutus gibbers a strange warning as the poets descend into the fourth circle. Here, hoarders and spendthrifts roll massive weights against each other in endless, furious conflict. Virgil explains how Fortune governs earthly riches according to divine providence. Moving to the fifth circle, they encounter the wrathful tearing at each other in the slimy waters of the River Styx.
Phlegyas ferries Virgil and Dante across the foul marsh of Styx toward the iron towers of the city of Dis. The arrogant Florentine noble Filippo Argenti attempts to grab the boat, but Virgil shoves him back into the mud where other sinners tear him apart. Upon reaching Dis, rebellious demons slam the gates shut, blocking further passage and leaving Virgil momentarily shaken.
Three shrieking Furies appear atop the burning walls of Dis, threatening to bring Medusa to turn Dante to stone. Virgil covers Dante's eyes until a heavenly messenger walks dry-shod over the River Styx to strike open the gate with a wand. Entering the sixth circle, the poets observe open tombs enveloped in flames, holding the burning bodies of heretics.
The Ghibelline leader Farinata displays immense pride as he rises from his burning tomb to speak with Dante. Farinata reveals that the damned can foresee distant future events but remain completely blind to present occurrences. Cavalcante dei Cavalcanti mourns his son Guido after misinterpreting Dante's past-tense reference to him. Farinata then predicts Dante's future exile from Florence before settling back into the fire.
Pausing near the tomb of Pope Anastasius to adjust to a terrible stench, Virgil outlines the structural layout of Hell. Sins of violence, fraud, and malice receive punishment according to their offense against God, nature, or human trust. Violence occupies the seventh circle in three rings, while fraud is punished in Malebolge and Treason in the icy lake below. This moral framework grounds the remaining journey in Aristotelian ethics.
The poets slip past the enraged Minotaur into the first ring of the seventh circle. A river of boiling blood, Phlegethon, scalds tyrants, murderers, and marauders who inflicted harm on their neighbors. Centaurs armed with bows patrol the banks to shoot any soul rising above its assigned depth. Nessus carries Dante across the river, pointing out Alexander the Great and Dionysius along the way.
No green leaves grow in the gnarled forest of the second ring, where souls who committed violence against themselves become thorny trees. Hideous Harpies nest in the branches and feed on the foliage, causing constant pain and bleeding. Dante breaks a twig from a tree and hears the voice of Pier della Vigna, who tells how false accusations led him to take his life. These souls will never reclaim their bodies after the final judgment.
A desert of burning sand under flakes of raining fire forms the third ring of the seventh circle. The arrogant giant Capaneus lies blaspheming, refusing to let God's punishment soften his defiance. Virgil explains the origin of Hell's rivers, which flow from the tears of the Old Man of Crete, a colossal statue composed of gold, silver, brass, iron, and clay. These weeping tears feed the Acheron, Styx, Phlegethon, and Cocytus.
Walking along a stone dike protected from the burning sand, Dante recognizes his revered former mentor, Brunetto Latini. Brunetto walks below with other intellectuals guilty of violence against nature. He praises Dante's literary talent and warns him against the political envy of his fellow Florentines. Though condemned to the fiery plain, Brunetto takes pride in his famous written work, the Tesoretto.
Three Florentine patriots circle each other like wrestlers while conversing with Dante on the burning sand. They inquire about the moral state of Florence, grieving as Dante confirms the decline of civic virtue. Reaching the edge of a precipitous cliff where Phlegethon roars downward, Virgil takes a cord from Dante's waist and flings it into the abyss. A terrifying hybrid monster emerges swimming up through the dense air.
Geryon, the monster of fraud with the face of a just man and the tail of a venomous scorpion, rests on the cliff's edge. While Virgil secures their passage, Dante examines the usurers sitting under the fire with heavy purses hanging around their necks. Mounting Geryon's scaly back, the poets spiral downward into the eighth circle through murky air. The monster deposits them safely at the base of the rocky chasm before darting away.
Malebolge consists of ten concentric stone trenches crossed by natural bridges. In the first pouch, horned demons lash pimps and seducers as they march in opposite directions. The second pouch holds flatterers submerged in a filthy trench of human excrement. Dante spots the courtesan Thaïs frantically scratching herself with dung-encrusted nails, illustrating the vile corruption of deceitful speech.
The third pouch holds simoniacs head-first in narrow stone holes, their protruding feet tortured by flames. Dante speaks with Pope Nicholas III, who mistakes Dante for his corrupt successor, Boniface VIII. Dante delivers a stern indictment against Church corruption and the buying of holy offices. Virgil carries Dante back up the steep rock wall, pleased with his pupil's righteous anger.
In the fourth pouch, diviners, astrologers, and false prophets walk silently in tears with their heads twisted backward over their shoulders. Because they sought to see too far ahead into the future, they must now only look behind them as they walk. Virgil points out ancient seers like Amphiaraus, Tiresias, and Manto, detailing the founding of his home city of Mantua. Dante weeps at the distortion of the human form.
The fifth pouch boils with sticky black pitch, punishing corrupt politicians and extortionists. A band of clawed demons called the Malebranche pitchfork any soul that rises above the boiling surface. Their leader Malacoda deceives Virgil by claiming a nearby bridge is intact while assigning an escort of demons to accompany them. Virgil trusts the demon's word, unaware of the impending trap.
The poets travel under demon escort alongside the bubbling pitch where barrators briefly poke their snouts out for air. The demon Graffiacane hooks a Navarrese sinner named Ciampolo and hauls him ashore. Ciampolo outsmarts his captors by offering to lure Italian comrades to the surface if the demons step back. When they comply, Ciampolo dives back into the pitch, sparking a brawl between two frustrated demons.
Escaping the furious demons, Dante and Virgil slide down a rocky bank into the sixth pouch. Hypocrites march endlessly in a slow procession wearing dazzling gilded cloaks lined with crushing lead. Dante speaks with two Jovial Friars who reveal Malacoda's lie about the bridge. On the ground lies Caiaphas, the high priest who urged Christ's crucifixion, staked naked across the pathway where every heavy cloak steps on him.
Virgil helps an exhausted Dante scramble up the broken ruin of the collapsed ridge out of the sixth pouch. Arriving at the seventh pouch, they observe thieves swarmed by terrifying serpents. A snake strikes the thief Vanni Fucci, who instantly bursts into ashes, collapses, and reconstitutes himself like a phoenix. Fucci bitterly prophesies political disaster for Dante's White Guelphs in Florence to spite his listener.
