Chapter I
Frustrated by Gerald Wade's stubborn morning sleeping habits, a house party syndicate conspires to teach him a lesson. Eight loud alarm clocks are hidden around his bedroom floor to ring at staggered intervals starting at dawn. Rupert Bateman cautions that ticking clocks will give the prank away, forcing the group to wait until Wade is asleep.
Chapter II
The alarm clocks ring as planned, but Gerald Wade lies dead in bed from a fatal overdose of chloral. Lord Caterham returns to Chimneys, irritated less by tragedy than by the vulgar annoyance of police inquests on his property. Speeding toward London in her Hispano-Suiza, Bundle Brent swerves to avoid a man stumbling out of a roadside hedge. The victim, Ronald Devereux, dies not from her car but from a hidden rifle bullet to his chest. Before collapsing, he mutters a desperate warning regarding Seven Dials and names Jimmy Thesiger.
Chapter V
A rural police sergeant dismisses Devereux's murder as a reckless accident caused by local boys shooting at birds. Suspicious of official incompetence, Bundle travels to London to consult Bill Eversleigh. She confirms that Devereux was Jimmy Thesiger's closest companion, making his final words far too deliberate to ignore.

Chapter XIX
