The Scope of Psychology
Psychology studies mental life, both its phenomena and its conditions. Mental phenomena include feelings, desires, cognitions, and volitions, while physical brain states serve as their essential bodily conditions. A purely cerebral account leaves out the subjective quality of experience, while a purely spiritual account ignores physical limits. Mind acts toward ends with choice of means, distinguishing conscious behavior from pure mechanism.
