Spots 
A heavy burden of guilt forces Christian to abandon the City of Destruction in search of salvation. Obstinate turns back, but Pliable accompanies Christian until both fall into the Slough of Despond. After Help pulls Christian from the mire, Worldly Wiseman misdirects him toward Morality, where Mount Sinai threatens to crush him. Evangelist redirects him back toward the Wicket Gate.
Goodwill admits Christian through the Wicket Gate and sends him to the House of the Interpreter. Inside, emblem rooms illustrate spiritual persistence, grace, and the perils of backsliding. A dusty room swept by Law only kicks up dirt until the Gospel waters it, showing how grace purifies the heart. Armed with these lessons, Christian sets out along the narrow fenced way.
Christian reaches a cross upon a hill, where his heavy burden rolls off his back into an open tomb. Three Shining Ones grant him new garments, a mark on his forehead, and a sealed roll for entry into the Celestial City. He ascends Hill Difficulty, losing his roll during a sleep in an arbour before recovering it. At Palace Beautiful, maidens provide him with spiritual armour.
Descending into the Valley of Humiliation, Christian encounters the monster Apollyon, who demands his return to the City of Destruction. A fierce battle ends when Christian wounds Apollyon with the Sword of the Spirit. Entering the Valley of the Shadow of Death, he walks a narrow path past pitiless abysses and blasphemous whispering demons. Hearing a fellow pilgrim's voice ahead restores his courage.
Christian catches up with Faithful, who recounts his own trials with Wanton and Adam the First. The pair meet Talkative, whose abundant religious vocabulary hides an unholy life lacking genuine fruit. Christian and Faithful expose Talkative's hypocrisy, prompting him to abandon them. Evangelist reappears to warn the pilgrims that one of them will soon suffer martyrdom in the town ahead.
Arriving at Vanity Fair, the pilgrims refuse to purchase the town's worldly distractions, declaring that they buy only the truth. Mocked and imprisoned, they are tried before Lord Hate-good, where Faithful is condemned and burned at the stake. A chariot immediately transports Faithful to the Celestial City. Hopeful, moved by Faithful's steadfast witness, joins Christian as his new companion.
Seeking an easier road, Christian and Hopeful stray into By-path Meadow, where Giant Despair captures them and imprisons them in Doubting Castle. The Giant beats them and urges suicide, feeding their despair. After days of darkness, Christian remembers he possesses the Key of Promise in his bosom, which unlocks every door of the dungeon and enables their escape.
The pilgrims reach the Delectable Mountains, where four shepherds—Knowledge, Experience, Watchful, and Sincere—welcome them. From the peak called Clear, the shepherds offer a telescope view of the distant gate to the Celestial City. They also point out dangerous cliffs where past wanderers blind and broken fell, warning the pair against the flatterer and the Enchanted Ground.
Christian and Hopeful meet Ignorance, who relies on his own good heart rather than faith in Christ's righteousness. Crossing the Enchanted Ground, Christian and Hopeful stay awake by discussing Hopeful's conversion and the nature of true fear. Ignorance refuses to abandon his self-righteous delusion, trailing behind the pair as they enter the joyful, sunlit land of Beulah.
To reach the Celestial City, the pilgrims must cross a deep, bridge-less river whose depth depends on their faith. Christian panics as he sinks into terrifying darkness, but Hopeful keeps his head above water by reminding him of Christ's promises. Stripped of mortal bodies, they ascend the hill accompanied by angels and pass through the golden gates, while Ignorance is bound and cast into hell.
