Ten years after Troy's fall, Odysseus remains trapped on Calypso's island of Ogygia while noble parasites devour his estate in Ithaca. Athena descends to rouse young Telemachus, urging him to assert his lineage and seek news of his missing father. Authority must be claimed before an inheritance can be saved.
Telemachus summons Ithaca's assembly for the first time since Odysseus departed, publicly denouncing the suitors who consume his herds. Antinous mocks the prince and blames Penelope's trick of unweaving her father-in-law's shroud by night. Supported by Athena in disguise, Telemachus equips a ship and sets sail into the night.
In Pylos, venerable King Nestor welcomes Telemachus with lavish sacrifices to Poseidon before knowing the youth's name. Nestor recalls the agony of Troy and the tragic returns of Agamemnon and Menelaus, though he lacks news of Odysseus's ultimate fate. Pity and tradition compel the elder to lend his son Peisistratus to guide the prince onward.
Sparta's King Menelaus and Helen host Telemachus amidst glittering hall treasures that conceal deep grief for fallen comrades. Menelaus recounts his own ordeal in Egypt, where the sea-god Proteus revealed that Odysseus survives held captive by the nymph Calypso. Meanwhile in Ithaca, the suitors lay an offshore ambush to murder Telemachus on his return voyage.
Hermes delivers Zeus's mandate to Calypso, forcing her to release Odysseus after seven years of captive longing on Ogygia. Odysseus builds a wooden raft and sets sail, only for Poseidon to shatter his craft in a ferocious storm. Assisted by Ino's protective veil, the battered hero swims onto the rocky shores of Scheria.
Athena directs the Phaeacian princess Nausicaa to wash linens near the river mouth where Odysseus lies exhausted. Waking castaway and naked, Odysseus uses tailored praise to win Nausicaa's compassion without frightening her maidens. She grants him clothing and instructs him how to enter her city as an humble suppliant.
Shrouded in Athena's mist, Odysseus enters the opulent palace of King Alcinous and Queen Arete. He throws himself at Arete's knees at the hearth, pleading for a ship to carry him to his native land. Impressed by his dignity and honesty, Alcinous promises safe passage across the mist-shrouded ocean.
Alcinous hosts athletic games and a grand banquet in honor of his unknown guest. When the blind bard Demodocus sings of the Trojan horse and the fall of Ilium, Odysseus hides his face in his purple cloak and weeps. Prompted by Alcinous, the wanderer finally reveals his true name and begins his story.
Odysseus recounts sacking Ismarus, visiting the Lotus-Eaters, and landing on the island of the Cyclopes. Trapped in the cave of Polyphemus, Odysseus blinds the man-eating giant with a heated stake and escapes under the bellies of sheep. Hubris drives Odysseus to shout his real name as he sails away, allowing Polyphemus to invoke Poseidon's vengeance.
Aeolus gifts Odysseus a leather bag containing all tempestuous winds, but curious crewmen untie it near home, blowing the ships back to sea. Cannibalistic Laestrygonians destroy eleven ships, leaving only Odysseus's flagship to reach Aeaea. There the enchantress Circe turns his men into swine until Odysseus uses the herb moly to conquer her magic.
Odysseus journeys to the edge of the world to summon the shades of the dead using sacrificial blood. The prophet Tiresias foretells his treacherous path home and warns against touching the cattle of Helios. Odysseus speaks with his late mother Anticleia and fallen comrades Agamemnon and Achilles, absorbing sobering truths about mortality and betrayal.
Circe outlines the dangers ahead, enabling Odysseus to hear the Sirens' enchanting song while lashed to the mast while his crew plugs their ears with wax. The ship navigates between the monster Scylla and the whirlpool Charybdis, losing six men. The disguised king tests the swineherd's hospitality, receiving food, shelter, and warmth. Odysseus weaves a complex false story of his origins in Crete, offering hope that the king will soon return.
Inspired by Athena, Telemachus leaves Sparta and eludes the suitors' deadly naval ambush waiting near Ithaca. Arriving on the coast, he sends his ship to the city while heading on foot to Eumaeus's remote hut. Eumaeus shares his own life story, revealing how he was born a prince before being sold into slavery as a child.
Telemachus arrives at the swineherd's shelter, where Athena briefly removes Odysseus's beggar disguise. Father and son weep in emotional embrace before turning immediately to strategic planning. They catalog the over one hundred suitors occupying the palace and devise a covert trap to disarm and eliminate them.
Telemachus returns to the palace while Odysseus walks to the city disguised as a beggar alongside Eumaeus. Outside the gate, Odysseus's old hunting dog Argus recognizes his master's voice, wags his tail, and dies. Inside the hall, the suitor Antinous hurls a footstool at the beggar, demonstrating the lawless cruelty infecting the house.
The palace suitors provoke a boxing match between the disguised Odysseus and Irus, a greedy local beggar. Odysseus knocks Irus unconscious with a single blow to the neck, earning the suitors' fleeting amusement. Penelope appears before the suitors, inspiring awe while cunningly coaxing valuable gifts from them to restore royal pride.
Penelope speaks privately with the disguised beggar, who describes Odysseus's attire with startling exactness to win her trust. While washing the guest's feet, the old nurse Eurycleia recognizes a scar on his thigh left by a wild boar in his youth. Odysseus silences her to protect the secret, while Penelope reveals her plan to set an archery contest.
Odysseus lies awake brooding over the suitors' insolence while Athena assures him of divine backing. On the morning of Apollo's feast day, thunderclaps and prophetic visions of blood-splattered walls disturb the feast, yet the suitors ignore the omens. The suitors escalate their insolence, throwing a cow's hoof at Odysseus as their doom draws near.
Penelope brings forth Odysseus's great bow, promising her hand to whoever can string it and shoot an arrow through twelve axe-heads. Every suitor fails even to bend the stiff wood. The disguised beggar asks for a turn, effortlessly bends the bow, strings it, and shoots cleanly through all twelve targets.
Odysseus sheds his rags, shoots Antinous through the throat, and reveals his true identity to the paralyzed suitors. Telemachus, Eumaeus, and Philoetius join him in blocking the exits and slaughtering the suitors with spears and arrows. The hall is thoroughly cleansed of blood and treason, restoring rightful ownership through decisive force.
Eurycleia wakes Penelope with news of Odysseus's return and the suitors' deaths, but the cautious queen remains skeptical. She tests him by commanding servants to move their marital bed outside their bedchamber. Odysseus protests, explaining that he built the bed around a living olive tree rooted in the foundation, satisfying Penelope of his identity.
Hermes conducts the souls of the dead suitors to the Underworld, where Agamemnon praises Penelope's legendary fidelity. Odysseus travels to the countryside to reunite with his grieving father Laertes in his orchard. When killed suitors' relatives march to avenge their kin, Athena intervenes to halt the blood feud and establish permanent peace in Ithaca.
