Ten years after the fall of Troy, Odysseus remains trapped on Ogygia by Calypso. In Ithaca, aggressive suitors consume his estate and press Queen Penelope to marry. Athena disguised as Mentes visits young Telemachus, urging him to call an assembly and sail to Pylos and Sparta for news.
Telemachus summons the elders of Ithaca to denounce the suitors squandering his inheritance. Antinous blames Penelope for deceiving them with her woven shroud for Laertes, unraveled every night. Zeus sends two eagles fighting overhead as an omen before Telemachus secretly sets sail.
Telemachus lands at Pylos during a massive sacrifice of black bulls to Poseidon. King Nestor offers lavish hospitality and recalls the glorious, deadly siege of Troy and the fractured return of the Achaean leaders. Though Nestor knows little of Odysseus's current fate, he sends his son Pisistratus to guide Telemachus to Sparta.
In Sparta, Menelaus and Helen welcome Telemachus during a double wedding feast. Menelaus recounts his own ordeal in Egypt, where he wrestled Proteus, the Old Man of the Sea, to learn the fates of Agamemnon and Odysseus. Meanwhile in Ithaca, the suitors set an ambush at the island of Asteris to murder Telemachus on his return journey.
Hermes flies to Ogygia, ordering Calypso to release Odysseus under divine decree. Odysseus builds a wooden raft and sets sail, but Poseidon spots him and raises a destructive storm that destroys his vessel. Clinging to the veil of the sea-nymph Leucothea, he swims ashore to the rugged coast of Scheria.
Athena prompts Princess Nausicaa of Phaeacia to wash clothes at the river mouth with her maidens. Odysseus awakens naked and salt-crusted, emerging from the bushes with an olive branch. Impressed by his eloquent plea, Nausicaa provides clothing and directs him to seek her mother Arete in the royal palace.
Athena wraps Odysseus in a mist as he walks through the magnificent bronze-walled city of the Phaeacians. Supplicating Queen Arete at her hearth, he wins the favour of King Alcinous. The king promises him safe transport home aboard a swift Phaeacian ship without yet learning his true name.
Alcinous hosts athletic games and a grand banquet in honour of his guest. The blind bard Demodocus performs songs of the quarrel between Odysseus and Achilles, causing Odysseus to weep quietly into his purple cloak. Prompted by the king after emotional outbursts, Odysseus finally prepares to reveal his identity.
Odysseus reveals his name and recounts his harrowing adventures after leaving Troy, starting with the Cicones and the Lotus-Eaters. Trapped in the cave of the monstrous Cyclops Polyphemus, Odysseus devises a plan, claiming his name is 'Nobody'. He blinds the giant with a sharpened stake and escapes beneath rams, but his boastful taunt invokes Poseidon's wrath.
Aeolus gives Odysseus a bag containing all stormy winds, but jealous crewmates open it within sight of Ithaca, blowing the fleet back. After giant Laestrygonians destroy eleven ships, the last vessel reaches Aeaea, home of the sorceress Circe. Circe turns the men into swine, but Odysseus uses the herb moly provided by Hermes to overcome her magic.
Following Circe's instructions, Odysseus sails to the dark edge of Oceanus and performs sacrifices to summon spirits of the dead. The blind prophet Tiresias warns him against harming the cattle of Helios on Thrinacia. Odysseus also speaks with his deceased mother Anticleia and fallen comrades Agamemnon and Achilles.
Odysseus resists the irresistible song of the Sirens bound to his ship's mast while his crew plugs their ears with beeswax. Navigating between the six-headed monster Scylla and the whirlpool Charybdis costs six men. On Thrinacia, his starving crew slaughters Helios's sacred cattle, prompting Zeus to destroy the ship with a lightning bolt, leaving only Odysseus alive.
The Phaeacians convey a sleeping Odysseus to a quiet bay on Ithaca, leaving him with rich gifts before Poseidon turns their returning ship to stone. Athena meets Odysseus on the beach, praising his sharp intellect. She transforms his appearance into a withered beggar to allow him to scout his home safely.
Odysseus travels to the upland farm of his faithful swineherd Eumaeus, who maintains deep loyalty despite believing his master dead. Eumaeus offers food, shelter, and a cloak to the stranger, sharing tales of the suitors' arrogant misdeeds. Odysseus invents a detailed false backstory as a Cretan traveler to test his servant's devotion.
Athena urges Telemachus to depart Sparta immediately, warning him of the suitors waiting in ambush at Asteris. Steering a secret course back to Ithaca, Telemachus takes aboard Theoclymenus, a prophet fleeing prosecution for murder. Landing safely on the Ithacan coast, Telemachus bypasses the town and walks straight to Eumaeus's rural shelter.
While Eumaeus walks to the palace to inform Penelope of her son's return, Athena removes Odysseus's beggar disguise. Telemachus marvels as his father stands revealed, and the two embrace with joyful weeping. Together they carefully calculate the numbers of the suitors and hatch a strategy to conceal weapons inside the great hall.
Telemachus returns to the palace first, followed by Odysseus disguised once more as a beggar accompanied by Eumaeus. Outside the gate, Odysseus's old hound Argus recognizes his voice after twenty years and wags his tail before dying quietly. Inside, Antinous hurls a stool at Odysseus, shocking even the other suitors with his brutality.
The palace beggar Irus aggressively challenges Odysseus to a boxing match for exclusive begging rights in the hall. Odysseus pulls up his rags to reveal powerful thighs, felling Irus with a single swift blow to the jaw. Odysseus privately warns the moderate suitor Amphinomus to flee, but Athena has already sealed the destiny of all the suitors.
Night falls, and Odysseus and Telemachus remove all battle gear from the hall. Penelope questions the stranger, who accurately describes Odysseus's cloak and brooch, bringing her to tears. While washing his feet, the old nurse Eurycleia recognizes an ancient boar-wound scar on his thigh, but Odysseus binds her to strict silence.
Odysseus lies awake contemplating his revenge, assured by Athena that victory is near. Morning brings thunder from Zeus and a prophet's vision of death hovering over the suitors as they feast. Seized by unholy, forced laughter sent by Athena, the suitors mock Telemachus and the strange prophet while blood drips from their meat.
Penelope retrieves Odysseus's massive hunting bow from the treasury, promising her hand to whoever can string it and shoot an arrow through twelve axe heads. Suitor after suitor fails even to bend the stiff wood. Disguised Odysseus takes the bow effortlessly, strings it like a lyre, and shoots cleanly through every target.
Shedding his rags, Odysseus shoots Antinous through the throat, declaring his identity and launching the slaughter. Telemachus, Eumaeus, and Philoetius join him in battle, locking the hall doors so no suitor can escape. With Athena's shield gleaming overhead, Odysseus cuts down every suitor and purifies the blood-soaked hall with brimstone.
Eurycleia wakes Penelope with news of Odysseus's return, but Penelope remains cautious against deception. She orders her maid to move their marital bed outside the chamber, triggering Odysseus's passionate protest that the bed is built into a living olive tree trunk. Recognizing this private secret, Penelope rushes into his arms in tears.
Hermes leads the spirits of the slain suitors down to the underworld, where Agamemnon praises Penelope's enduring fidelity. Odysseus travels to the countryside to reunite with his grieving father Laertes in his orchard. When vengeful relatives of the suitors attack, Athena intervenes in divine glory, commanding an eternal covenant of peace over Ithaca.
