Happiness Is the Ultimate End of All Human Action

Moral excellence does not arise in humans by nature, nor is it contrary to nature; rather, potential is refined into virtue through repeated practice. Virtue is a disposition to hit the mean between two extreme vices—one of excess and one of deficiency. Courage, for example, lies precisely between cowardice and rashness. Striking this balance requires training passions and actions until choosing the middle course becomes second nature.

Moral Action Requires Choice and Voluntary Agency

Praise and blame apply only to voluntary actions, which originate within an agent who knows the relevant particulars of the situation. Forced actions or those done out of genuine ignorance of circumstances lack moral accountability. Deliberation precedes choice, focusing not on ultimate ends themselves but on the practical means to achieve them. Courage stands as the primary example of voluntary endurance, facing fear to preserve honor.

Specific Virtues Govern Wealth, Honor, and Social Intercourse

Magnanimity represents the crown of moral virtues, belonging to one who deems himself worthy of great things while being truly worthy of them. Generosity regulates the giving and taking of wealth, avoiding both wastefulness and stinginess. Wit, friendliness, and truthfulness govern daily social conversation, keeping human interaction between boorishness and obsequiousness. Each specific virtue fine-tunes a particular sphere of human life toward noble expression.

Justice Maintains Harmony Through Proportional Equality and Rectification

Justice encompasses both lawful behavior and fair distribution among members of a community. Distributive justice assigns honors and assets according to merit, maintaining geometric proportion. Rectificatory justice restores balance when private transactions inflict harm, acting as a judge who corrects unfair losses. Equity goes beyond written law, adjusting general legal rules to fit the specific nuances of actual circumstances.

Practical Wisdom Guides Moral Action Toward Right Reason

Intellect splits into theoretical wisdom, which contemplates unchangeable truths, and practical wisdom, which deliberates well about human action. Practical wisdom, or phronesis, cannot exist without moral virtue, because virtue sets the correct goal while practical wisdom secures the proper means. Knowing universal principles is insufficient without the experience required to perceive particulars. Right reason acts as the steering rudder that directs ethical habits toward right action.

Weakness of Will Occurs When Passion Overpowers Knowledge

Incontinence, or akrasia, presents the puzzle of acting against one's own judgment of what is best. The incontinent person possesses knowledge in a dormant state, like someone asleep or drunk, but strong bodily desire suppresses active reasoning. This differs from outright vice, where the agent acts deliberately on bad principles without regret. Recovery remains possible for the weak-willed because their fundamental belief about the good remains uncorrupted.

True Friendship Arises from Mutual Love of Character

Friendship is an indispensable virtue for human life, existing in three distinct forms based on utility, pleasure, or virtue. Utility and pleasure friendships break down easily when the underlying benefit or enjoyment fades. Perfect friendship occurs between good people who wish each other well for the other person's own sake. This complete bond requires time, shared living, and reciprocal goodwill grounded in enduring character.

Self-Love Forms the Foundation for Loving Others

A good person's feelings toward a friend reflect their relationship with themselves. Proper self-love means gratifying the rational element of the soul rather than competing for material goods or bodily pleasures. By seeking truth and noble action, the virtuous person benefits both himself and the wider community. True friendship extends self-awareness, allowing one to contemplate virtuous actions through a companion like a second self.

The Highest Happiness Lies in Rational Contemplation

Pleasure completes activity like the bloom on youth, but not all pleasures are worthy of pursuit. Purest and most self-sufficient happiness consists in theoretical contemplation, the activity of the divine part within humans. While practical virtues require external resources and social interactions, contemplation demands only leisure and a mind attuned to truth. Legislation and proper civic education remain necessary to cultivate the habits that make such a life possible.
