Kenneth points out his singular lock of white hair, calling it an unmistakable identifier that would reveal his identity under any disguise. This lost brother bore a distinct scar on his left index finger. The revelation sparks Kenneth's curiosity about whether his long-lost sibling might still survive somewhere in the world.

Signor Keralio attempts to compromise Helen by poisoning her mind with insinuations about her husband's financial speculations in Wall Street. In South Africa, Kenneth meets his long-lost twin brother, a destitute gambler known as Handsome. Rather than feeling fraternal gratitude when offered ten thousand dollars to start a new life, Handsome harbors bitter resentment over Kenneth's fortune. A sinister scheme takes root in Handsome's mind to eliminate Kenneth, seize the fortune of raw diamonds, and steal his brother's identity. Meanwhile, back in Manhattan, Helen hosts a grand evening party oblivious to the betrayal unfolding abroad.

CHAPTER IX → CHAPTER X

Calamity leaves behind altered traits and masked intentions

A devastating newspaper report of a steamship fire initially convinces Helen that her husband has perished along with his newfound twin brother. Joy returns when a cablegram announces Kenneth survived the disaster and is returning to New York. However, the returning man arrives wearing dark blue spectacles to shield injured eyes and exhibits a strangely altered demeanor. Valet François warns Helen that severe physical trauma and nervous shock have altered her husband's voice and habits.

CHAPTER XI → CHAPTER XIII

Deceit unravels under the pressure of hidden guilt

During a celebratory homecoming dinner, the returned husband displays uncharacteristic coarseness, heavy drinking, and sudden outbursts of temper. Pressed privately by mining company president Parker about the valuable South African diamonds, he falsely claims the gems were lost in the shipwreck. Suspicious of the lie, Parker consults lawyer Wilbur Steell to launch a discreet investigation into the missing treasure. Steell links the husband's suspicious behavior to previous Wall Street dealings with the dubious Keralio.

CHAPTER XIV → CHAPTER XVI

Clues linked to betrayal expose a hidden criminal network

The impudent valet François is abruptly discharged by Helen after displaying shameless insolence and suspicious familiarity. Wilbur Steell discovers a counterfeit ten-dollar bill with a distinct spelling error, which Ray received directly from the ousted valet. Recognizing the connection between François and Signor Keralio, Steell and Dick Reynolds secretly shadow the former valet into Bronxville. Their pursuit leads them toward the hidden headquarters of an international counterfeiting ring and potential answers about the missing diamonds.

CHAPTER XVII → CHAPTER XIX

Truth shatters deception when malice brings villainy to light

Desperate to recover her kidnapped daughter Dorothy, Helen follows an anonymous note alone to a secluded house in the Bronx with closed green shutters. There she confronts Signor Keralio, who terrifyingly reveals that her true husband was murdered in South Africa by his twin brother Handsome, who currently impersonates him. When Keralio attempts to blackmail Helen into submission using her child, her maternal courage flares into fierce physical resistance as she strikes her tormentor with a cane.
