Desperation and stolen identity fuse when violence strikes in San Francisco

On a rainy San Francisco night, destitute Mary Smith accepts help from tall cowboy Cultus Collins, only to be caught in a deadly saloon shootout between gunman Speed Evans and lawyer Loring. In the darkened chaos, Cultus accidentally grabs a trunk containing a high-stakes scam: train tickets to Arizona, cash, and documents for an actress named Janice Lee. Cultus convinces Mary to assume Janice's identity and head to Oreana, where the paralyzed owner of the wealthy Lazy A ranch has recently died under mysterious circumstances.

Cattlemen’s Association secretary Al Traynor hires Cultus Collins after receiving a paranoid letter from Jud Ault, who feared conspirators were circling the Lazy A ranch. Adopting the alias Jones of Oklahoma, Cultus boards the Arizona train alongside Mary Smith to investigate undetected. Meanwhile in Oreana City, rival Star X cowboys pick a fight with Lazy A hands Pie Ide, Mex Leone, and Omaha Woods before ambushing foreman Idaho Breen to hijack the incoming heiress as a local prank.

Conspirators convert an inheritance scam into a forced property takeover

Dude Wheeler rescues Mary after the hijacked buggy crashes, bringing her to the Star X ranch where old Eph Wheeler vents his bitter history against Jud Ault. Attorney Miles Lane reads Jud’s will, bestowing the vast ranch to his alleged niece Mary while leaving a single dollar to disowned daughter Faith Keene. Lane privately coerces Mary into maintaining her false identity, unaware that Cultus Collins has quietly hired on at the Lazy A to untangle the surrounding web of fraud.

Unmasking a dead mastermind exposes the illegal mechanics of land theft

Cultus visits Faith Keene and discovers her missing husband Jack Keene is actually Loring, the lawyer killed in the San Francisco shootout. Meanwhile, Shif'less Hill finds newspaper clippings confirming Keene's death and confronts Miles Lane, causing the terrified attorney to lose control of his scheme. Lane discovers Shif'less butchering stolen cattle in the abandoned Suicide Mine, setting off a scramble between corrupt insiders and covert investigators to control the evidence before the conspiracy collapses.

Exposing violent deceit breaks a conspiracy and reclaims stolen land

Idaho Breen shoots Cultus and forces Mary into a runaway buggy over dangerous mountain grades, but Mary survives when thrown clear into the brush. Dude Wheeler carries Mary to safety while a bleeding Cultus rides into Oreana City to confront Breen and Miles Lane. Cultus shoots Breen in a high-stakes street duel and tackles Lane's fleeing horse, unmasking the fraudulent bill of sale and ending the violent plot to loot the Lazy A.
