Spots 
In the beginning, God creates the heavens and the earth out of formless void and darkness. Over six days, light, sky, dry land, vegetation, sun, moon, stars, sea creatures, birds, land animals, and humanity are called into existence by divine command. Humanity is created in God's image to have dominion over creation. On the seventh day, God rests, blessing and sanctifying it.
God forms man from the dust of the ground and breathes into his nostrils the breath of life. A garden is planted eastward in Eden, containing the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God places man in Eden to tend it, forbidding him to eat from the tree of knowledge under penalty of death. Recognizing man's solitude, God creates woman from a rib taken from Adam.
The serpent deceives Eve into eating the forbidden fruit, and Adam eats as well. Immediately, both realize their nakedness and sew fig leaves together to cover themselves. When confronted by God, Adam blames Eve, and Eve blames the serpent. God pronounces curses upon the serpent, woman, and ground, expelling Adam and Eve from Eden to prevent access to the tree of life.
Eve bears Cain and Abel; Cain becomes a tiller of the ground while Abel becomes a keeper of sheep. God accepts Abel's animal sacrifice but rejects Cain's crop offering, prompting Cain to murder Abel in a field. When God inquires after Abel, Cain responds with his infamous query regarding his brother's keeper. God marks Cain to protect him from vengeance while condemning him to wander the earth.
The lineage from Adam to Noah spans ten generations, recording extreme longevity among early human patriarchs. Seth, Enos, Cainan, Mahalaleel, Jared, Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech, and Noah form the genealogical bridge across centuries. Enoch walks faithfully with God and vanishes without experiencing natural death. Methuselah lives nine hundred and sixty-nine years, becoming the longest-lived individual in the biblical record.
Human wickedness multiplies on the earth, grieving God and prompting a decree to destroy human and animal life. Noah finds grace in the eyes of the Lord because he is a just and blameless man in his generation. God instructs Noah to build a massive ark out of gopher wood with specific dimensions and three decks. Noah is instructed to bring his family and pairs of every living creature into the ark.
Noah, his wife, his three sons, their wives, and pairs of all animals enter the ark before God shuts the door. Fountains of the great deep burst forth and heaven's windows open, causing rain for forty days and forty nights. Waters rise high above the highest mountains, eradicating all land-dwelling living things outside the ark. The waters prevail upon the earth for one hundred and fifty days.
God remembers Noah and sends a wind to cause the floodwaters to abate until the ark rests on Mount Ararat. Noah sends forth a raven and then a dove; the dove returns with an olive leaf, signaling dry ground. God commands Noah to emerge from the ark with his family and all creatures to repopulate the earth. Noah builds an altar and offers burnt offerings, leading God to promise never again to curse the ground for man's sake.
God blesses Noah and his sons, establishing a covenant never to destroy all flesh by a flood again. The rainbow is set in the clouds as the eternal sign of this divine promise. God permits humanity to eat animal meat but strictly forbids consuming blood or shedding human blood. Noah plants a vineyard, becomes drunk, and Ham dishonors him, leading to a curse upon Canaan and blessings for Shem and Japheth.
The descendants of Noah's sons—Japheth, Ham, and Shem—spread across regions to form distinct nations and languages. Nimrod, a grandson of Ham, emerges as a mighty hunter and establishes major cities including Babel, Erech, Accad, and Nineveh. The text outlines maritime territories, clan lineages, and geographic boundaries that define the ancient Near Eastern world. This chapter establishes the origin of diverse peoples prior to their division.
Humanity speaks a single language and gathers in the plain of Shinar to build a tower reaching heaven. They seek to make a name for themselves and avoid being scattered across the earth. God descends to observe their project, confounds their single speech into mutual incomprehension, and scatters them worldwide. The narrative then traces Shem's genealogy down to Terah, the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
God commands Abram to leave Haran for a land that God will show him, promising to make him a great nation. Abram departs at age seventy-five with his wife Sarai, nephew Lot, and their possessions, arriving in Canaan. After building altars at Shechem and Bethel, a famine forces Abram to migrate down to Egypt. Fearing for his life, Abram claims Sarai is his sister, leading Pharaoh to take her until plagues reveal the truth.
Abram returns from Egypt wealthy in livestock, silver, and gold, settled again between Bethel and Ai. Quarrels erupt between the herdsmen of Abram and Lot because the land cannot support their combined herds. Abram offers Lot first choice of territory to prevent strife, and Lot chooses the fertile Jordan valley near Sodom. Abram remains in Canaan, where God reaffirms that his descendants will inherit the land in all directions.
Four eastern kings invade the Jordan plain, defeat local rulers, and capture Lot along with Sodom's goods. Abram arms three hundred and eighteen trained servants, pursues the invaders north to Hobah, and successfully recovers Lot and the captives. Upon returning, Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God Most High, blesses Abram with bread and wine. Abram gives Melchizedek a tenth of everything and refuses personal payment from Sodom's king.
God reassures Abram in a vision, promising him a natural heir and descendants as numerous as the night stars. Abram believes God's promise, and God credits this faith to him as righteousness. God instructs Abram to divide sacrificial animals, and at sunset a deep sleep and dread fall upon him. A smoking furnace and burning lamp pass between the meat pieces, sealing God's covenant to grant the land to Abram's seed.
Sarai remains childless after ten years in Canaan and gives her Egyptian maid Hagar to Abram as a wife. When Hagar conceives, tension arises between her and Sarai, leading Sarai to treat her harshly until Hagar flees into the wilderness. The angel of the Lord finds Hagar at a spring, instructs her to return, and promises her son Ishmael will multiply. Abram is eighty-six years old when Hagar gives birth to Ishmael.
When Abram is ninety-nine, God renames him Abraham and renames Sarai as Sarah, promising nations and kings through them. God institutes circumcision for every male infant at eight days old as an everlasting physical sign of the covenant. Abraham laughs at the prospect of having a child at one hundred years old, but God promises Sarah will bear Isaac. Abraham immediately circumcises himself, Ishmael, and all males in his household.
Three visitors arrive at Abraham's tent near Mamre, and Abraham prepares a feast of bread, meat, and milk for them. The Lord promises Sarah will give birth to a son within a year, prompting Sarah to laugh inwardly. As the visitors depart toward Sodom, God reveals the impending judgment on the city's grave sins. Abraham intercedes persistently, securing a divine pledge to spare Sodom if ten righteous people are found there.
Two angels arrive in Sodom, where Lot welcomes them, but the men of Sodom surround his house with violent intent. The angels blind the attackers, urge Lot to flee with his family to Zoar, and forbid looking back. Fire and brimstone rain from the sky upon Sodom and Gomorrah, destroying the cities and the entire plain. Lot's wife disobeys the warning, looks back, and becomes a pillar of salt.
Abraham journeys south to Gerar and again claims Sarah is his sister, causing King Abimelech to take her. God warns Abimelech in a dream that Sarah is married, protecting Abimelech from touching her and committing sin. Abimelech confronts Abraham, who explains his fear of godlessness in Gerar and reveals Sarah is his half-sister. Abimelech restores Sarah, bestows gifts and land upon Abraham, and Abraham prays to heal Abimelech's house.
Sarah gives birth to Isaac just as God promised, and Abraham circumcises the child on his eighth day. Tension erupts during Isaac's weaning feast when Sarah sees Ishmael mocking, demanding Hagar and her son be cast out. God tells Abraham to heed Sarah, promising to make Ishmael a nation as well. Hagar and Ishmael wander in the Beersheba wilderness until God opens her eyes to a well of water.
God tests Abraham by commanding him to offer his beloved son Isaac as a burnt offering on Mount Moriah. Abraham obeys promptly, traveling three days, building an altar, binding Isaac, and raising the knife to slay him. An angel halts Abraham, pointing out a ram caught in a thicket by its horns to sacrifice instead. God swears by Himself to multiply Abraham's seed as the stars of heaven and sand of the seashore.
Sarah dies at Kirjatharba (Hebron) at age one hundred and twenty-seven, and Abraham mourns and weeps for her. Abraham negotiates with Ephron the Hittite in the presence of the city elders to acquire a burial property. He insists on paying full price, weighing four hundred shekels of silver for the cave of Machpelah and the surrounding field. Abraham buries Sarah in the cave, securing his family's first deeded possession in Canaan.
Abraham charges his senior servant with an oath to find a wife for Isaac from his ancestral kin in Mesopotamia. The servant travels to Nahor's city and prays for a sign: the maiden who offers water to him and his camels will be God's choice. Rebekah arrives at the well, offers water generously, and her family agrees to the marriage after hearing the servant's story. Rebekah travels to Canaan and meets Isaac, bringing him comfort after his mother's death.
