The text recounts a recluse's encounters with a monstrous chasm where a river vanishes into the earth. Hanging over this abyss sits a solitary wall fragment, marking the boundary where ordinary geography yields to cosmic architecture.
II THE PLAIN OF SILENCE → III THE HOUSE IN THE ARENA
Returning to his isolated house after a dazing cosmic vision, the Recluse discovers swine-faced humanoids lurking in the deep ravine known as the Pit. His hound Pepper suffers a severe claw wound from a pale creature that walks upright. Soon, swine-things prowl the tangled gardens and peer through study windows with glowing eyes. As night falls, a horrific chorus of bestial shrieks rises from beneath the floor, initiating a harrowing siege.
IV THE EARTH → VII THE ATTACK
Defending the home from the roof, the Recluse shoots the subterranean attackers, but the fallen corpses vanish by dawn. To protect his terrified sister Mary, he locks her in her room while nursing the injured Pepper. Searching the vast, gloomy cellars beneath the foundation, he uncovers a heavy iron trapdoor set into the solid rock floor. Pulling it open reveals an unmeasurable, wind-swept abyss from which a haunting, distant laughter echoes.
VIII AFTER THE ATTACK → XII THE SUBTERRANEAN PIT
A sudden deluge floods the ravine, submerging the cavern entrance and sealing the swine-creatures beneath a lake. Yet opening the cellar trapdoor exposes spray-laden wind and thundering water, proving the house rests directly over a subterranean void. Seeking solace in his solitude, the Recluse experiences a luminous vision of the Sea of Sleep. There he briefly reunions with his lost love before his spirit is swept back across the stars.
XIII THE TRAP IN THE GREAT CELLAR → XVI THE AWAKENING
Accelerating through vast aeons, the Recluse watches the sun swing rapidly across the sky until its motion slows into long, ponderous beats. The earth turns into a snow-covered wasteland beneath a dying sun of dark copper and black belts. Rotational energy decays until day and night expand into hours, then stop entirely. The solar system freezes into a motionless gloom, leaving the ruined house standing in perpetual quiet.
XVII THE SLOWING ROTATION → XXI THE DARK SUN
Floating through a dark nebula filled with blind, sorrowful faces, the Recluse's spirit returns to the green-glowing replica house on the Plain of Silence. He wakes in his study to find his hound Pepper transformed into a heap of grey ash. A luminous, green-flamed hand incinerates his sister's cat at the window, while a mouldy stench pervades the garden path. Realizing his physical refuge is breached, he awaits his imminent death.
XXII THE DARK NEBULA → XXVII CONCLUSION
Pencil-written stanzas attached to the manuscript express the raw essence of bereavement underpinning the Recluse's journey. The entire universe becomes a vast, tolling church where every night sky reflects the unbearable absence of a lost beloved. Star-bells knell for a life hurled into blank nonexistence, leaving only an aching memory on the shore of eternity. A trailing ink line on the final page marks the quiet end of his lonely vigil.
