Stanford Beale and Parson Homo breach the grounds of Deans Folly and locate Oliva at her bedroom window. Stanford Beale breaks into an underground bunker beneath a London property, discovering van Heerden’s hidden laboratory. Inside, gloved technicians in gas masks fill fragile glass vials with an engineered crop-destroying fungus designed to induce mass starvation across Allied nations. Beale monitors the factory from behind stacked shipping crates before being captured at gunpoint by van Heerden and Milsom. Though trapped, Beale confirms that the entire global plot relies on a single central facility where the biological weapon is refined.

CHAPTER XXIV → CHAPTER XXVIII

Centralized conspiracies crumble when vital keys vanish

Milsom turns King's evidence after van Heerden shoots him, revealing that the global release of the Green Rust is stalled because van Heerden lost his master telegraphic code. Oliva realizes the code was concealed inside the pocket watch pledged on the pawn ticket she discovered. Before the police can act, van Heerden breaks into Oliva’s quarters at gunpoint to reclaim the ticket and force her flight. The entire fate of the world's grain supply hinges on securing a tiny piece of paper before the villain escapes.
