CHAPTER I → CHAPTER II
Orme trails South American diplomats Poritol and Alcatrante through Lincoln Park, noticing a stocky operative shadowing their footsteps. A violent midnight struggle erupts in the dark park paths when two Japanese assailants spring from the shrubbery to corner Alcatrante. The smooth minister dismisses police involvement to shield Poritol's hidden enterprise, while slyly attempting to coax the marked currency back from Orme's possession.
CHAPTER III → CHAPTER IV
Deciphering the scribbled notation on the paper, Orme drives north along Sheridan Road into Evanston alongside the mysterious young woman. He paces off exact distances through the dark university grounds to reach a hollow oak tree by the lake shore. There he clashes with Japanese operative Maku, recovering a scribbled address from the stunned assailant while the missing documents vanish into the night.
CHAPTER V → CHAPTER VI
Orme joins life-saver Porter in a motor launch to search the dark waters of Lake Michigan for the abducted woman. Spotting her in a disabled craft with a Japanese agent, they maneuver close enough for her to leap aboard their vessel. Orme attempts to capture the fleeing operative with an improvised lariat, but the adversary skillfully parries the rope and escapes into the night.
CHAPTER VII → CHAPTER VIII
Orme evades a suspicious private detective sent to pry into his hotel room at the Père Marquette. Trapped inside Madame Alia's closet as Japanese agents join her spiritualist circle, Orme relies on the medium's cunning escape plan. Disguised in soft felt slippers and a heavy black hood, he waits for three gong strikes to step into the darkened room. While the sitters marvel at ghostly apparitions, Orme silently glides past his distracted pursuers to gain the hallway.

Trapped together inside an air-tight commercial vault in the Rookery building, Orme and the Girl face imminent suffocation after Alcatrante bolts the heavy door. Traveling toward Winnetka with Bessie Wallingham, Orme thwarts a desperate sabotage attempt by Poritol and leaves the diplomat kneeling in a field. Reaching the suburban estate, Orme uses Madame Alia's eerie veil technique to scatter the remaining Japanese lookouts at the gate. He hand-delivers the vital documents to the Girl, earning her gratitude and confirming their enduring future together.
