Space and time are subjective conditions of human sensibility

Sensory experience requires pre-existing mental frames to organize raw impressions. Space and time do not exist as independent entities in the physical universe, nor are they empirical concepts drawn from observation. Instead, they operate as pure a priori forms of intuition inherent to mind. Everything perceived in the external world or reflected upon internally must pass through these native lenses, shaping reality as human cognition receives it.

Understanding unifies raw sensory impressions using foundational mental concepts

Perceptions without concepts remain blind, while thoughts without intuition remain empty. Human cognition links sensory data through twelve innate categories of understanding, including causality, substance, unity, and necessity. Through the transcendental deduction, self-consciousness actively synthesizes diverse sensations into a coherent mental world. Experience is thus constructed by applying these necessary mental rules to intuition rather than passively recording objects.

Schemes of time bridge abstract mental categories and concrete sense perceptions

Pure concepts of understanding cannot apply directly to raw sensory appearances without a mediating bridge. The mind generates transcendental schemata—temporal patterns that translate abstract logical categories into sensible forms. Cause and effect, for instance, manifests in experience as regular succession in time. Principles like the persistence of substance and universal causal interaction establish the necessary laws governing physical nature.

Reason missteps when treating the self as a simple substantial soul

Pure reason inevitably attempts to cross beyond the bounds of possible sensory experience into speculative metaphysics. The psychological paralogisms arise when formal self-awareness—the unifying 'I think'—is mistaken for an immortal, indivisible spiritual substance. Logical self-identity during thought does not prove the existence of an enduring metaphysical soul. Conflating subjective conditions of consciousness with objective knowledge of a soul generates illusory claims about human nature.

Speculative reason entangles itself in inescapable cosmological contradictions

When investigating the universe as a total whole, reason constructs equally convincing arguments for contradictory claims. These antinomies prove that the world is finite and bounded yet infinite, composed of simple indivisible parts yet infinitely divisible, governed by absolute causality yet containing free will. Such rational impasses reveal that space, time, and cosmos are appearances rather than things-in-themselves, exposing the inherent limits of human knowledge.

Theoretical proofs for God exceed the valid boundaries of human knowledge

The ideal of pure reason projects an ultimate concept of all reality, which metaphysics identifies as God. Traditional speculative proofs—ontological, cosmological, and teleological—fail because existence is not a real predicate that can be reasoned into reality without empirical intuition. Conceptions of a necessary supreme being serve as useful regulating ideals for organizing knowledge, but theoretical cognition can never establish God's objective existence.

Practical faith fulfills the legitimate moral destination of human reason

Although theoretical reason cannot prove freedom, immortality, or God, practical moral reason demands their reality. Moral duty requires an objective highest good, uniting virtue with ultimate happiness, which is attainable only if the soul endures and a moral ruler governs reality. Reason establishes strict boundaries for scientific inquiry while preserving essential space for moral conviction, transforming speculative metaphysical longing into a practical imperative for human action.
