Far Away and Long Ago

Before the worlds were fashioned, only Ginnungagap existed, a vast primordial void flanked by fire and frost. From these meeting elements arose the ancient giants and the Aesir, led by Odin All-Father. Upon the high seat of Hlidskjalf, Odin watches over the nine realms connected by the great ash tree Yggdrasil. The gods established Asgard as their home, setting the cosmic order that keeps chaos at bay.

The Building of the Wall

A stranger arrives in Asgard offering to build an impenetrable wall in one winter, demanding the sun, the moon, and Freya as payment. Loki convinces the Aesir to accept the bargain, believing the task impossible without helper hands. When the builder relies on his mighty stallion Svadilfari and nears completion ahead of schedule, Loki transforms into a mare to lure the horse away. Stripped of his stallion, the giant reveals his true form and meets his end by Thor's hammer.

Iduna and Her Apples

Iduna holds the magical golden apples that grant eternal youth to the Aesir. While traveling through wilderness, Loki falls into the clutches of the giant Thiassi, who demands Iduna and her fruit in exchange for Loki's freedom. Trapped by fear, Loki deceives Iduna into leaving the safety of Asgard under the pretense of showing her wild fruit. Thiassi swoops down in eagle form, carrying Iduna off to his distant stronghold in Jötunheim.

How Loki Brought Trouble to Asgard

Deprived of Iduna's apples, the gods in Asgard grow old, grey, and feeble. Realizing Loki's betrayal, Odin threatens him with death unless he recovers the guardian of youth. Loki borrows Freya's falcon plumage, flies into Jötunheim, and transforms Iduna into a tiny nut to carry her back. Thiassi pursues in eagle form, but the Aesir light tall fires along Asgard's walls, burning the giant's wings as he crosses the threshold.

How Brock the Dwarf Made the Treasures for the Gods

Loki maliciously shears off the golden hair of Sif, and her enraged husband Thor forces him to find a remedy. Loki visits the subterranean forge of the dwarfs, pitting rival smiths against one another in a contest of skill. Brock and Sindri endure Loki's pestilent interference to forge Mjolnir, the formidable hammer whose handle was shortened by a fly's bite. Along with Sif's new hair of real gold, the dwarfs craft the ship Skidbladnir and the spear Gungnir.

How Freya Gained Her Necklet

Freya wanders into the dark caverns where four dwarf craftsmen fashion Brisingamen, a necklace of matchless splendour and warmth. Entranced by its beauty, she offers gold and silver, but the smiths demand four nights of her companionship in exchange for their creation. Freya consents to their terms and returns to Asgard wearing the radiant ornament. Loki discovers her secret trade and steals the necklet while she sleeps, initiating a bitter struggle with Heimdall for its retrieval.
