Book I: Divine Prophecy Launches the Expedition into Perilous Waters

King Pelias receives a prophecy warning of a one-sandaled man, prompting him to send Jason on an impossible voyage to fetch the Golden Fleece. Jason gathers fifty of Greece’s greatest heroes, including Heracles and Orpheus, aboard the newly crafted ship Argo. Their initial voyage takes them to Lemnos, where women rule alone, and then to Mysia. There, Heracles loses his beloved companion Hylas to water nymphs and is left behind, forcing the crew to sail forward without their strongest champion.

Book II: Prophetic Guidance Steers the Ship Past Fatal Hazards

The Argonauts land in Bebrycia, where King Amycus challenges all travelers to fatal boxing matches until Polydeuces defeats him. Further along, the crew frees the blind seer Phineus from tormenting Harpies, gaining crucial advice for surviving the Symplegades. By releasing a dove to test the crashing rocks, the heroes time their rowing as the stone jaws snap shut behind them. Guided by divine favor and prophetic counsel, the Argo navigates treacherous coastal realms toward the eastern edge of the known world.

Book III: Enchanted Love Enables Triumph Over Impossible Trials

Upon reaching Colchis, King Aeëtes refuses to surrender the Golden Fleece without a deadly test of strength and endurance. Hera and Athena intervene by persuading Eros to strike the king’s daughter, Medea, with unyielding passion for Jason. Skilled in sorcery, Medea risks treason to provide Jason with a protective salve and strategic counsel against bronze-hooved bulls and dragon-seed warriors. Love becomes the decisive force that allows Jason to plow the field and slay the earthborn soldiers unharmed.

Book IV: Sorcery and Sacrifice Mark the Odyssey Back Home

Medea puts the watchful dragon guarding the Golden Fleece to sleep with an enchantment, allowing Jason to seize the prize. As Colchian ships pursue them, Jason and Medea murder her brother Absyrtus, incurring divine wrath that requires purification at Circe’s island. Their harrowing return spans northern rivers, the Mediterranean, and the Libyan desert, where the heroes carry their own ship across sun-baked sands. Medea defeats the giant bronze automaton Talos in Crete before the crew finally reaches home.
