Practical training and discipline turn raw fire into assault discipline
Rigorous field exercises under Major-General Penn-Symons at Dundee prepared the 2nd Battalion for the sudden onset of war in October 1899. At Talana Hill, the infantry faced direct shellfire, pompom bursts, and sweeping rifle marksmanship across open veld and steep boulder-strewn slopes. Officers like Captain Weldon died rescuing wounded soldiers while others pressed forward through dongas and stone walls. Penn-Symons fell mortally wounded, yet the battalion proved that structured preparation sustains soldiers through high-casualty frontal assaults.
