
On the Sufferings of the World
Suffering forms the positive, active reality of human experience, whereas pleasure is merely the temporary absence of pain. Happiness goes unnoticed until it disappears, while physical or mental torment asserts itself instantly and inescapably. If pain were not the immediate object of existence, life would lack all rational explanation.
