Resourcefulness and raw instinct overcome ancient, monstrous perils

Valeria of the Red Brotherhood flees into unexplored jungle, only to be pursued by the Cimmerian mercenary Conan and trapped atop a high crag by a prehistoric dragon. Rather than waiting for starvation, Conan improvises a spear coated with lethal fruit juice to blind and poison the monster. Their escape from the creature brings them to the mysterious, sprawling enclosed city of Xuchotl rising in the plain. The sorceress seeks to drain Valeria's vital life energy to renew her own uncanny youth, showing how ancient, corrupt rulers view all outsiders as mere fuel for their survival. Total victory over external enemies only exposes the rot within a dying civilization's leadership.
