俞伯牙摔琴謝知音

Music reaches its highest purpose only when a true listener perceives the player's inner mind. When musician Yu Boya plays his guqin by the river, woodcutter Zhong Ziqi hears the exact imagery of lofty mountains and flowing rivers in the strings. After Ziqi dies of illness, Boya smashes his instrument upon Ziqi's grave and snaps its strings. He vows never to play again, because true understanding cannot be replaced.

莊子休鼓盆成大道

Human devotion often crumbles under the test of hidden temptation and sudden desire. To test his wife's fidelity, the philosopher Zhuangzi feigns his own death and transforms into a handsome young prince. When his wife agrees to split open Zhuangzi's coffin to retrieve brain tissue to cure the prince, Zhuangzi resumes his form and exposes her hypocrisy. Grief and shame drive her to suicide, prompting Zhuangzi to beat an earthenware tub, sing of worldly futility, and depart to seek the Dao.

王安石三難蘇學士

Intellectual pride blinds even brilliant scholars to the depth of practical knowledge. The poet Su Shi mocks Chancellor Wang Anshi's couplet about chrysanthemum petals falling in the wind, believing flowers only wither on the stem. Later banished to Huangzhou, Su Shi witnesses autumn winds blow petals to the ground, realizing his own ignorance. Subsequent tests involving spring water for tea further force Su Shi to acknowledge that true scholarship requires keen observation rather than arrogance.

拗相公飲恨半山堂

Dogmatic reform detached from human reality brings ruin to both the state and its author. Chancellor Wang Anshi enforces his New Policies with unyielding stubbornness, ignoring the hardship imposed on common villagers. After retiring to Banshan Hall, he travels in disguise and hears ordinary citizens singing bitter songs about ruined farms and oppressive taxes. Overwhelmed by remorse and the realization of his errors, his health declines rapidly until he dies in profound regret.
