After an off-campus University of Guelph homecoming party descended into chaos last weekend, other Ontario universities say they are working to minimize the impacts of similar upcoming events.
The unsanctioned party in Guelph on Saturday risked the safety of students and neighbours, university president Rene Van Acker said in a statement.
Videos circulating online show massive crowds of young people filling the streets, and some of them throwing bottles and other items as police officers tried to control the situation. The videos also show police putting some people in handcuffs.
“The University of Guelph is deeply disappointed by what occurred, and we are clear that this cannot happen again,” Van Acker said, adding that the school will review the incident.
He said the people who got involved in property damage and other disruptive behaviour also included those who do not attend the university.
Guelph police said the gathering was “significantly larger” than similar events in recent years and officers were dealing with objects being thrown, people climbing buildings, as well as shoplifting and vandalism at nearby businesses.
They said officers laid several criminal and provincial charges, including causing a disturbance and numerous alcohol-related offences.
“Homecoming is an opportunity for students, residents and visitors to celebrate together. Most people enjoyed the day responsibly, but behaviour that puts others at risk cannot be accepted,” said Guelph police Chief Gord Cobey. Guelph is not the only university town that has at times struggled to contain rowdy off-campus parties in the fall.
In Ottawa, the annual Panda Game between Carleton University and the University of Ottawa football teams is taking place this weekend and Carleton said it recognizes the event can affect nearby communities.
Post-game misbehaviour in recent years included people flipping a car and stealing street signs, and has sent several people to the hospital.
