True faith outlasts earthly tyrants and corrupt generations
Inside a Gothic church during Holy Week, the speaker contrasts the enduring faith of past generations with modern corruption and submission to despots. As night falls, a terrifying vision takes hold of the empty nave: the dead rise from beneath the flagstones. An archangel brandishing a flaming sword divides the spirits into the serene righteous and the hopeless condemned. The poet awakes from this nightmare to warn hypocrites that God’s justice reaches even into the shadow of the altar.
