BOOK I.
The fallen angels assemble to deliberate their next move against Heaven's ruler. Mammon suggests building a self-contained empire in darkness, but Satan steers the assembly toward corrupting God's newest creation on Earth instead.
BOOK II.
From his heavenly vantage point, God beholds Satan flying toward Earth and foresees humanity's inevitable downfall. Moral responsibility depends entirely on liberty; coerced obedience carries no genuine virtue. When divine justice demands a penalty for impending transgression, the Son willingly offers his own life to ransom mankind.
BOOK III.
Infiltrating the lush borders of Eden, Satan suffers intense agony as he realizes his inner Hell travels with him everywhere. Watching Adam and Eve enjoy unblemished intimacy and bliss only deepens his bitter resentment. Unable to regain his lost glory, he resolves to ruin human happiness by targeting their single restriction.
BOOK IV.
Eve awakens distressed by a nightmare wherein a heavenly figure entices her to eat forbidden fruit. Adam reassures her of her innocence, noting that troubling thoughts carry no guilt unless embraced by reason. To ensure humanity remains prepared, God sends the archangel Raphael to remind Adam of his free will and the enemy plotting his downfall.
BOOK V.
Raphael recounts the war in Heaven, highlighting Abdiel, the solitary angel who stood against Satan's legions to uphold truth. Physical force clashes across the heavens until the Messiah intervenes, driving the unrepentant rebels over the celestial abyss. True strength lies not in numbers or brute power, but in steadfast allegiance to divine reason.
BOOK VI.
At Adam's request, Raphael describes how the Son framed the cosmos following the expulsion of the rebel angels. Spanning the boundless void with golden compasses, divine power establishes the boundaries of light, sea, and land. The emergence of Earth demonstrates that good continually expands to replace what evil seeks to destroy.
BOOK VII.
Satan sneaks back into Paradise under cover of darkness and possesses a sleeping serpent. The next morning, Eve suggests splitting their gardening duties to cover more ground, despite Adam's misgivings about potential danger. Her desire for independent achievement creates the precise opportunity the intruder requires to execute his deception.
BOOK VIII.
News of the transgression reaches Heaven, and the Son descends to pronounce judgment upon the guilty pair and the Serpent. Strife immediately corrupts human relationships as Adam shifts blame onto Eve, while Eve points to the subtle serpent. Sin and Death construct a permanent highway from Hell to Earth, cementing mortality's reign over creation.
BOOK IX.
Touched by divine grace, Adam and Eve abandon bitter quarrel and offer sincere prayers of contrition. God accepts their repentance but commands Michael to escort them out of Eden, guarding the entrance with a flaming sword. Though banished into a fallen world, they depart hand in hand, sustained by the promise of ultimate restoration.
