Cast out of Heaven into a lake of liquid fire, Satan rouses his stunned legions to defy divine omnipotence. Rather than submit to eternal torment, the fallen archangel declares that the mind can make a Heaven of Hell or a Hell of Heaven. Under the direction of Mulciber, the demons construct Pandemonium, a gleaming palace rising from the abyss to serve as their council hall.
In the council at Pandemonium, Moloch urges open war while Belial advocates peaceful submission and Mammon seeks self-sufficiency in Hell. Beelzebub proposes corrupting God's newly created world, and Satan volunteers to undertake the perilous journey alone. At Hell's gate, Satan confronts Sin and Death before plunging into the tumultuous, unshaped expanse of Chaos.
God the Father watches Satan approach Earth and foretells human disobedience, establishing that humanity was created free to fall. When God demands a sacrifice to satisfy divine justice, the Son offers his own life to redeem mankind. Meanwhile, Satan disguises himself as a youthful cherub to deceive Uriel, the archangel of the sun, into directing him toward Eden.
Overwhelmed by internal torment on Mount Niphates, Satan admits his own despair before leaping over the wall of Paradise. He watches Adam and Eve living in innocent bliss and learns of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Under cover of night, Satan leaps into Eden, assumes the form of a toad, and whispers disturbing dreams into Eve's ear before Gabriel expels him.
Eve awakens from her Satanic dream, and God sends the archangel Raphael to Eden to remind Adam of human free will and obedience. Dining with the couple, Raphael recounts how Satan first rebelled in Heaven after God exalted the Son. Only Abdiel stood firm against Satan's fiery arguments, refusing to abandon loyalty to God.
Raphael details the cosmic war between faithful and rebel angels, marked by intense combat and Satan's invention of gunpowder cannons. As the battle stalls on the second day, God sends the Son alone on the third day in his divine chariot. Armed with thunderbolts, the Son drives the rebellious angels out of Heaven's precipice into the fiery pit of Hell.
At Adam's request, Raphael relates the creation of the world following the defeat of the rebel angels. Over six days, the Son of God uses golden compasses to mark out the boundaries of the universe from Chaos. Earth, sky, oceans, plants, animals, and humanity emerge in harmony to fill the cosmic void left by the fallen host.
Adam inquires about celestial motions, but Raphael counsels him to seek practical human wisdom rather than lose himself in cosmic mysteries. Adam then shares his earliest memories of awakening in Eden, speaking with God, and requesting Eve as a companion. Raphael cautions Adam against letting sensual passion govern reason before returning to Heaven.
Satan enters Eden as a serpent and finds Eve working alone. By flattering her beauty and arguing that the forbidden fruit confers wisdom, he convinces Eve to eat from the tree of knowledge. Devoted to Eve and fearing life without her, Adam knowingly eats the fruit as well, plunging both into lust, guilt, and mutual accusation.
The Son descends to pronounce judgment, clothing Adam and Eve while cursing the serpent and altering Earth's environment. Sin and Death build a bridge across Chaos connecting Hell to Earth, but when Satan returns triumphantly to Pandemonium, he and his demons are transformed into hissing snakes. Adam and Eve move from despair to repentance, praying together for divine grace.
God accepts Adam and Eve's tearful repentance but decrees their permanent expulsion from Paradise to prevent them from eating from the tree of life. Archangel Michael descends to lead them out, taking Adam up a high hill. Michael reveals a vision of future human suffering, including the first murder by Cain and the Great Flood.
Michael finishes narrating human history, describing the Tower of Babel, the covenant with Abraham, and the eventual arrival of the Messiah. Reassured that salvation will conquer Sin and Death, Adam and Eve find internal peace despite their loss. Hand in hand, the couple shed quiet tears as Michael leads them past the flaming sword out of Eden into the world.
