Ancient terror breaks human resolve in a primeval wilderness

Exploring the northern reaches of Caspak, Bradley's search party encounters monstrosities that defy evolutionary logic. While armed men can fend off primitive tribes and extinct carnivores, the psychological toll of an unknown winged phantom unnerves the group. Tippet succumbs to fatalistic dread shortly before meeting his end in the jaws of a Tyrannosaurus. The expedition quickly discovers that surviving primeval beasts is easier than keeping superstition from shattering human discipline.

Chapter I

Technical sophistication can mask a culture of absolute barbarism

Abducted into the aerial city of Oo-oh, Bradley witnesses the grotesque civilization of the winged Wieroos. Despite possessing literacy, paper, and advanced metallurgy, the bat-winged creatures construct their vast metropolis out of human skulls and ritualized murder. Bradley turns his military instinct into survival by using physical force against his avian captors when cornered. Killing his captor Fosh-bal-soj inside a decorated roost, he hides the corpse among accumulated treasures of stolen gold.

Chapter 2 → Chapter 3

Hierarchical tyrannies collapse when confronted with direct defiance

Venturing through the temple's hidden passages, Bradley rescues the Galu woman Co-Tan and confronts the supreme ruler of Oo-oh. The blue-robed priest demands the secret of evolutionary life, only for Bradley to exploit the despot's paranoia and strike him down. Escape requires descending a refuse shaft into the subterranean river of corpses that flows beneath the city's foundations. Though unable to save his captive ally An-Tak, Bradley secures Co-Tan's trust as they navigate the pitch-black tunnels toward freedom.

Chapter 4

Survival yields to love and liberation on the edge of exile

Forcing captured Wieroos to airlift them across the inland sea, Bradley and Co-Tan reach the Caspakian mainland. There they stumble upon the U-33, where the treacherous German commander von Schoenvorts has enslaved Bradley's surviving crew. A coordinated assault frees the British prisoners and allows a mutinous German soldier to end von Schoenvorts's tyranny. Reunited with Tom Billings and Co-Tan's father Tan in the Galu territory, Bradley wins Co-Tan's heart and prepares the submarine for their final escape from Caprona.
