Helen and Sadie Burton arrive at the quiet Gladwin residence expecting a secret romantic meeting. A smooth impostor has adopted Travers Gladwin's identity to romance Helen while systematically preparing to steal his famous paintings. Inside the house, the genuine home owner discovers the plot just as the visitors request entry.
CHAPTER XII. → CHAPTER XVI.
Travers Gladwin guides Helen through his hidden room of gold vessels and rare miniatures without revealing his ownership. Helen remains convinced that her charming suitor owns the extraordinary collection and plans to take it on their honeymoon. Meanwhile, Whitney Barnes detains Sadie by reading her palm, attempting to derail the pending elopement.
CHAPTER XVII. → CHAPTER XXI.
Travers Gladwin offers patrolman Michael Phelan five hundred dollars to exchange clothes for a prank. Clad in the official police uniform and a glued-on mustache, Gladwin steps onto the street to patrol his own neighborhood. His improvised authority leads him to pull over an old friend for driving too slowly while courting.

After assisting local neighborhood children on his beat, Gladwin sneaks back into his dark house. Helen arrives at the mansion ready to elope, unaware that her fiancé is a high-profile art robber. Gladwin, disguised in his police uniform, is forced to obey the thief's arrogant demands to fetch packing trunks for his own paintings. He constantly interrupts the couple's romantic moments to delay their departure.
CHAPTER XXIX. → CHAPTER XXXII.
Bateato runs frantically to the precinct station to report the burglary, bringing heavy police reserves toward the mansion. Whitney Barnes gets delayed on the street while saving a woman's cat from a menacing bulldog. When police arrive, the clever thief boldly claims HE is Travers Gladwin and accuses others of trespassing.
CHAPTER XXXIII. → CHAPTER XXXVI.
Cornered inside the closed rooms, the master thief surrenders his empty pistol and acknowledges his true criminal career to Gladwin. In the adjoining den, Helen recovers from fainting while Whitney Barnes fans her with exotic feathers while wearing handcuffs. The thief wraps himself in a curtain to evade the searching officers.
CHAPTER XXXVII. → CHAPTER XL.
The master thief slips past the police cordon disguised in an officer's uniform, returning the stolen masterpieces out of respect for Gladwin. Michael Phelan emerges unharmed from a heavy storage chest where he was hidden. Gladwin satisfies Helen's aunt, secures Helen's affection, and saves the police department from public embarrassment.
