Historical Sketch Documents Cherokee Resilience Across Centuries of Removal
Hernando de Soto encountered the Cherokee in 1540, initiating centuries of territorial pressure by European settlers and the United States government. Sequoyah created an eighty-five character syllabary in 1821, enabling rapid literacy and native publication. The 1838 forced removal along the Trail of Tears marched thousands west to Indian Territory, while a persistent group under Yonaguska remained in the Great Smoky Mountains.
