Close observation of the ground near a studio doorway uncovers the meticulous architecture of solitary ground-nesting insects. The digger wasp excavates a subterranean shaft, provisions the nursery with paralyzed prey, and seals the entryway with deliberate camouflage. What looks like ordinary turf proves to be a dense neighborhood of specialized tunnels and hidden chambers.
Up in the eaves and branches, hornet colonies build gray paper dwellings from scraped and chewed wood pulp.
