In the streets of Trieste, Sarcany and Zirone capture a carrier pigeon bearing an encrypted note attached to its leg. The stray interception of a single coded slip exposes a massive political conspiracy before its leaders even realize they are monitored. Small acts of opportunism can unravel complex revolutionary movements.
Count Mathias Sandorf meets with fellow Hungarian patriots Stephen Bathory and Ladislaus Szathmar to organize a liberation uprising against Austrian rule. Their aristocratic certainty in the secrecy of their cipher blinds them to physical interception in Trieste. Noble purpose offers no protection against the mechanics of espionage.
Sarcany brings the intercepted cipher to the corrupt banker Silas Toronthal, who successfully decodes the message revealing the uprising. Driven by greed and heavy debts, Toronthal joins Sarcany in betraying Sandorf and his allies to the Austrian authorities for a fortune. Greed easily converts intercepted correspondence into court evidence.
Sandorf, Bathory, and Szathmar are condemned to death and confined high in the fortress of Pisino overlooking the Istrian chasm. Trapped behind stone walls and heavy iron grates, Sandorf refuses despair and seeks a path out of the cell. Physical confinement only shifts a captive's focus toward absolute survival.
During a storm, Sandorf and Bathory climb down an exterior lightning rod along the outer wall of Pisino Castle. They drop into the dark, churning waters of the Foiba gorge below to evade their captors. Survival demands braving lethal natural obstacles when human enemies surround every exit.
