Arriving at the Golden Lion inn, the Bovarys dine with local residents. Emma meets Léon Dupuis, a young law clerk who shares her love for romantic literature and melancholy music. Their immediate mutual attraction stems from mutual dissatisfaction with provincial surroundings. Unlike Charles, Léon offers Emma intellectual sympathy and romantic posturing.
