Political collapse forces conspirators to seek a principled commander.

Six nobles gather in a grimy mountain hovel near Sant'Angelo to confront the ruin of Babbiano under Duke Gian Maria Sforza. Francesco del Falco, Count of Aquila, arrives masked in mercenary leather after evading the spy Masuccio Torri. Old Fabrizio da Lodi exposes the Duke's reckless dalliance and the looming shadow of Caesar Borgia. The conspirators offer Aquila leadership to salvage their state before foreign invasion swallows it whole.

CHAPTER I. VOX POPULI → CHAPTER III. SACKCLOTH AND MOTLEY

Compassionate care binds a wounded noble to a princess.

Wounded in his escape, Aquila swoons before Monna Valentina della Rovere, niece to Guidobaldo of Urbino. Valentina bathes his brow while her jester Peppe looks on, kindling an immediate bond between the young noble and the convent-reared lady. When the arrogant Romeo Gonzaga arrives with soldiers and threatens to bind Aquila as a bandit, Valentina and the fiery Fanfulla force Gonzaga to retreat in humiliation.

CHAPTER IV. MONNA VALENTINA → CHAPTER VI. THE AMOROUS DUKE

Jealous tyrants turn violent when spurned by proud lovers.

Duke Gian Maria arrives at Urbino to press his suit upon Valentina, surrounding her with boorish arrogance. Valentina rejects his crude advances, frees her hand from his grip, and delivers a stinging slap across his face. When Peppe the jester taunts the Duke about a grander rival in Valentina's heart, Gian Maria reacts with vindictive fury. He secretly orders Captain Martin Armstadt to abduct the jester and unmask his competitor.

CHAPTER VII. GONZAGA THE INSIDIOUS → CHAPTER VIII.

Brutal interrogation fails against sworn loyalty and heroic silence.

At the Palazzo Valdicampo in Cagli, Armstadt delivers the captive hunchback Peppe to Gian Maria's bedchamber. The Duke demands the identity of the wounded knight whom Valentina sheltered near Sant'Angelo, suspecting him of treason. Bound by an oath of secrecy, Peppe refuses to break his word even when subjected to the agony of the strappado. His silence drives the cruel Duke into an escalating rage.

CHAPTER IX. THE “TRATTA DI CORDE” → CHAPTER X.

True freedom outweighs the glittering burden of a crown.

Mother Caterina and the court convince Gian Maria that executing the beloved Aquila would ignite a popular uprising across Babbiano. The Duke grudgingly commutes the sentence to banishment, giving Aquila twenty-four hours to leave. Fabrizio da Lodi offers Aquila the vacant leadership of the state, but the Count declines the throne in favor of open-air liberty. Joined by Fanfulla, Aquila rides out beneath the stars toward Urbino territory.

CHAPTER XI. WANDERING KNIGHTS → CHAPTER XIII.

Dominance rests on physical courage rather than empty titles.

Reaching Roccaleone, Aquila discovers Ercole Fortemani's rowdy mercenaries assaulting his servant Lanciotto. Armed only with a bullock-hide whip, Aquila scatters the pack and hurls the monstrous captain Fortemani into a tank of stagnant water. When an assassin's dagger glances off Aquila's armor, he cold-cocks the attacker with one punch. Monna Valentina immediately orders Fortemani's chastised garrison to submit to Aquila's authority.

CHAPTER XIV. FORTEMANI DRINKS WATER → CHAPTER XVI.

Competent leadership exposes cowardice and neglected defences.

Gian Maria surrounds Roccaleone, prompting Valentina to appoint Aquila as Provost of the fortress. Romeo Gonzaga displays pale anxiety, while Aquila coolly inspects the battlements and delivers a scathing rejection to the Duke's herald. Inspecting the garrison's supplies, Aquila uncovers a crippling negligence: Gonzaga left only a single cask of gunpowder in the armoury. The discovery sparks a bitter confrontation between the seasoned commander and the courtier.

CHAPTER XVII. THE ENEMY → CHAPTER XVIII. TREACHERY

Desperate cowards resort to secret treason to save themselves.

Peppe retrieves a crumpled bribe letter discarded by Gonzaga, offering one thousand florins and immunity to betray Roccaleone. Though Aquila dismisses the thought of outright treason, Gonzaga secretly incites the sentry Cappoccio to mutiny against prolonged resistance. Gonzaga advises Gian Maria to issue a terrifying ultimatum of immediate bombardment. Aquila counters by mounting empty cannons along the parapets to bluff the besiegers into hesitation.

CHAPTER XIX. PLOT AND COUNTERPLOT → CHAPTER XX. THE LOVERS

Hypocritical devotion masks a calculated plot of betrayal.

Gonzaga feigns deep religious repentance, attending daily Mass to win back Valentina's trust while plotting to unlock the postern gate during Corpus Christi service. Hearing that Babbiano citizens threaten to depose him in favor of Aquila, Gian Maria eagerly accepts Gonzaga's scheme. Aquila's courier Zaccaria swims the moat at night carrying urgent letters, but Gonzaga intercepts him at the armoury tower to keep Aquila blind to the imminent trap.

CHAPTER XXI. THE PENITENT → CHAPTER XXIII. IN THE ARMOURY TOWER

A treacherous trap collapses into a decisive counter-ambush.

On Corpus Christi morning, Gonzaga murders sentry Aventano and lowers a makeshift bridge over the moat to admit Gian Maria and a hundred armed men. The invading force breaks down the outer gates and marches into the chapel expecting defenceless worshipers. Instead, Aquila, Fortemani, and fully armed defenders emerge to corner the intruders inside God's house. Gonzaga's calculated betrayal ends in total capitulation as the siege of Roccaleone collapses.

CHAPTER XXIV. THE INTERRUPTED MASS → CHAPTER XXV.
