Sensational press thrives on deception and extortion

The scandal sheet De Alarmkreet masquerades as a defender of truth while operating as a high-stakes blackmail scheme. When editor Charles Röttger publishes a slanderous attack against John Raffles, the famous gentleman thief resolves to investigate the paper. Raffles's secretary Charly Brand encounters fur trader Thomas Spancer, who is being squeezed for five thousand pounds over a fabricated scandal. Meanwhile, Röttger swallows a planted tip promising damaging evidence against Scotland Yard.

De Alarmkreet EERSTE HOOFDSTUK. DE REDACTIE.

Bureaucracy and fear make authority vulnerable to blackmail

Inspector Baxter frets over archaic formatting rules and his lingering embarrassment over John Raffles, making him quick to lose his temper with Detective Marholm. When blackmailers Röttger and Kroyzer arrive at Scotland Yard carrying a forged letter, Baxter panicked by potential personal scandals grants them an audience. Outside the door, Marholm secretly listens in through a spyhole. The confrontation shows how fear of exposure exposes even law enforcement officials to manipulation.

TWEEDE HOOFDSTUK. IN SCOTLAND YARD.

Elusive schemers construct traps out of false leads

Raffles poses as Detective Marholm to feed Röttger and Kroyzer a fake story about Lord Melbourne poisoning his stepmother for money. When the real Detective Marholm tracks the blackmailers to Raffles's hideout, Raffles turns the investigator into an ally. Together they coordinate a plan to expose the extortionists at a vacant villa in Regent Park. Charly Brand prepares disguises and props to turn the upcoming meeting into a trap.

DERDE HOOFDSTUK. DE MOEDERMOORDENAAR.

Hypocrisy collapses when met with decisive physical action

Röttger and Kroyzer arrive at Regent Park demanding ten thousand pounds from Raffles, who is disguised as Lord Melbourne. After listening to their moralizing speeches, Raffles seizes a riding whip and soundly thrashes both extortionists. The bruised villains rush to Scotland Yard to press charges, only for Detective Marholm to inform them that Lord Melbourne died eight years prior. Their attempt to weaponize the law founders on their own greed and ignorance.

VIERDE HOOFDSTUK. EEN HEILZAME LES.

The printed word becomes a weapon of self-sabotage

Sneaking into the empty editorial office of De Alarmkreet, Raffles finds the printer's final proof sheets left behind by an errand boy. Using the editor's own pen, Raffles rewrites every story, transforming attacks into praise for himself and publicly detailing the paper's extortion rackets. He appends a front-page notice advising readers that Scotland Yard will close the operation. Unaware of the revisions, the boy collects the proofs and delivers them to the press.

VIJFDE HOOFDSTUK. EEN BEZOEK AAN DE ALARMKREET.

Arrogance walks willingly into its own public downfall

Raffles leads the unsuspecting blackmailers back to Scotland Yard, where Inspector Baxter confronts them with their own illegal extortion demands. The real Detective Marholm steps forward to reveal how they were tricked by an impersonator. Police escort the pair to the Regent Park villa, where they find an abandoned room containing only a hanging whip and a mocking note from Raffles. The next morning's altered paper dismantles the scandal sheet permanently.

ZESDE HOOFDSTUK. DE VAL.

Authority relies on rigid notices to capture fluid identities

Scotland Yard issues an official arrest warrant for Lord Edward Lister, known as John C. Raffles, offering a one-thousand-pound reward for his capture. The document lists physical metrics, distinct manners, and a monocle, yet highlights his ability to adopt a new persona every day. By contrasting static bureaucratic descriptions with Raffles's endless disguises, the publisher's appendix emphasizes the futility of chasing a master of deception through traditional police methods.
