Bishop Myriel of Digne meets convict Jean Valjean with unconditional mercy, handing him two silver candlesticks after a theft to buy his soul for God. Reborn under this grace, Valjean breaks parole and prospers as Mayor Madeleine in Montreuil-sur-Mer. When an innocent man named Champmathieu is mistaken for him, Valjean exposes his own identity in court. He promises the dying Fantine to protect her young daughter Cosette before Police Inspector Javert takes him back into custody.
Valjean escapes custody from a naval vessel and travels to the village of Montfermeil. He rescues young Cosette from the abusive innkeepers, the Thénardiers, paying off her mother's debt. Pursued relentlessly through Paris by Javert, Valjean shelters behind the high walls of the Petit-Picpus convent. Old Fauchelevent, whom Valjean once saved from a crushed cart, hides them as convent gardeners, giving Cosette a peaceful upbringing in secret.
Marius Pontmercy leaves his royalist grandfather, Monsieur Gillenormand, upon discovering the military heroism of his deceased Bonapartist father. Living in poverty, Marius joins Enjolras and the radical Friends of the ABC. At the Luxembourg Gardens, he catches sight of Cosette and falls deeply in love. Meanwhile, his impoverished neighbors, the Jondrettes—who are actually the ruined Thénardiers—trap Valjean in a scheme, though Javert interrupts the ambush before bloodshed occurs.
Marius and Cosette meet privately in the garden of Rue Plumet until political turmoil forces Valjean to plan a move to England. Following the funeral of General Lamarque, the 1832 June Rebellion erupts across Paris. Student revolutionaries erect a barricade on Rue Saint-Denis. Éponine dies protecting Marius from a musket shot, entrusting him with a letter for Cosette, while Valjean enters the fighting to safeguard the young man Cosette loves.
Valjean spares Inspector Javert at the fall of the barricade, granting his pursuer freedom. He carries the unconscious Marius to safety through the labyrinthine sewers of Paris. Driven to crisis by Valjean's unforgivable kindness, Javert leaps into the Seine. Marius recovers, marries Cosette, and learns of Valjean's heroic sacrifice only as the old man dies, reconciled and illuminated by the light of his silver candlesticks.
