When given the chance to execute Inspector Javert, Valjean leads the prisoner into a deserted alley and cuts his bonds, firing a shot into the air to fake the execution. As the military forces breach the stronghold, Valjean lifts the unconscious, severely wounded Marius onto his shoulders and vanishes into the darkness beneath the streets.
Underneath Paris lies an underground labyrinth that reflects the city above, catching its waste, secrets, and forgotten sins. This subterranean network grew from unmapped, disease-ridden channels into a vast engineered system of stone and water. The dark tunnels serve as both a graveyard for urban debris and a sanctuary for those fleeing the light of official justice.
Carrying Marius through the subterranean darkness, Jean Valjean struggles through knee-deep sludge and treacherous subterranean collapses. At a locked iron outlet near the Seine, the criminal Thénardier mistakes Valjean for an ordinary murderer disposing of a corpse and unlocks the gate in exchange for money, tearing a secret scrap from Marius’s coat. Exiting into the night, Valjean immediately encounters Javert waiting on the riverbank.
Javert grants Valjean brief leave to return Marius home and visit his residence one last time, but then departs without arresting his lifelong quarry. Confronted by an act of selfless virtue from a convicted felon, Javert's rigid moral binary collapses into irreconcilable contradiction. Unable to live in a world where law and divine justice diverge, the inspector leaps from Pont Notre-Dame into the swirling Seine.
Marius slowly recovers under the care of his grandfather, Monsieur Gillenormand, who abandons his political animosity out of joy for his grandson’s survival. Valjean secures Cosette’s future by presenting her hidden inheritance of over five hundred thousand francs, accumulated during his years as a factory owner. With the grandfather's enthusiastic blessing, Marius and Cosette are united in marriage.
On the night of the wedding celebration, Valjean feigns a hand injury to avoid signing official marriage documents under a false name. Alone in his room, he endures a tormenting internal battle between maintaining his quiet life beside Cosette and telling the truth. Remaining silent would preserve his happiness through deception, while confessing his criminal past threatens to sever the only bond he holds dear.
Valjean reveals his former identity as a paroled convict to Marius the morning after the wedding, insisting he must withdraw from Cosette’s life. Marius receives the confession with horror and growing suspicion, mistakenly believing Valjean murdered Javert and stole his fortune. Permitted only brief, restricted visits in a cold basement room, Valjean suffers the gradual erosion of his role in Cosette’s household.
Deprived of Cosette’s presence, Valjean deliberately isolates himself in a sparse room as his health rapidly deteriorates. He stops visiting altogether, choosing slow starvation and sorrow over imposing his shameful past upon the young couple. His physical decline accelerates rapidly, driven entirely by the heartbreak of separation from the daughter he saved.
Thénardier arrives in disguise seeking to sell damning secrets about Valjean to Marius, but his revelations accidentally prove Valjean’s innocence and heroism. Realizing Valjean saved his life at the barricade and in the sewers, Marius rushes with Cosette to the dying man’s bedside. Valjean imparts his final blessing of love and forgiveness before passing away, to be buried beneath an uncarved stone.
