Soft living breeds carelessness until real responsibility intervenes

At Graffam Academy, wealthy senior Percy Whittington recklessly wrecks his automobile, frustrating his stern father John P. Whittington. Meanwhile, self-made classmates Jim Spurling, Roger Lane, and Winthrop Stevens seek summer work to fund their college tuition. Jim proposes taking over his uncle’s commercial fishing setup on isolated Tarpaulin Island off the Maine coast. To teach Percy discipline and hard labor, he joins the boys on their ambitious maritime venture.

JIM SPURLING, FISHERMAN → TARPAULIN ISLAND

Isolation forces quick thinking when lawlessness threatens remote frontiers

Settling into Camp Spurling, the boys discover that living miles off the mainland brings unexpected danger. Midnight revolver shots break the island quiet as sheep thieves Dolph and Captain Bart Brittler land from an unmarked schooner. Rather than panicking, Jim sculls quietly into the dark cove to hide the thieves' getaway dory, trapping them on the island. The encounter reveals that survival requires vigilance, cool nerve, and practical strategy.

IV → TRAWLING FOR HAKE

Integrity matters most when taking shortcuts promises easy profit

Life on the ocean turns into grueling physical labor as the crew pulls hake trawls and hauls heavy lobster pots. Percy struggles with slimy catches, aching muscles, and messy fish-dressing, finding commercial fishing far harder than expected. When hauling lobster traps yields undersized catches, Percy suggests selling them secretly to out-of-state smacks. Jim flatly refuses, establishing that clean money and legal compliance outweigh quick financial shortcuts.

VII → FISTS AND FIREWORKS

Humiliation and failure serve as catalysts for personal growth

During a Fourth of July excursion to Vinalhaven, Percy acts arrogant and gets drawn into a violent fistfight with Jabe, a tough local youth. Although Percy uses boxing technique, Jabe’s brute strength leaves him battered and defeated. The sting of loss, combined with an impulsive mistake injuring the camp dog Nemo, forces Percy to confront his own physical softness and poor attitude. He begins helping with camp chores and earning his keep.

X → PULLING TOGETHER

Shared peril and mentorship illuminate the cost of wasted talent

Thick summer fog blankets Penobscot Bay, raising the hazards of coastal navigation. While hauling traps at the Dog and Pups ledges, Percy and Filippo get hopelessly lost in blinding mist until Jim signals them to safety. Later, an eccentric lone sailor named Thorpe visits their cabin, playing brilliant violin and reading Latin. Thorpe reveals he is an educated lost alumnus ruined by drink, offering a haunting warning about squandering one's potential.

XIII → A LOST ALUMNUS

Endurance is forged when survival depends on unyielding determination

A sudden norther catches Jim and Percy out on Clay Bank, snapping their engine and blowing their dory out into open ocean. Trapped on a surging ocean whistling buoy at Cashes Ledge, they endure forty-seven hours of blinding spray, freezing winds, and extreme thirst without food or fresh water. Percy draws on unexpected willpower to stay upright alongside Jim until Captain Greenlaw of the Gracie King and a Coast Guard cutter rescue them.

XVII → ON THE WHISTLER

True strength comes from discipline rather than boastful arrogance

Returning to Vinalhaven on an errand, Percy encounters Jabe and his gang once again. Having spent months pulling heavy trawls, rowing in open seas, and building physical muscle, Percy offers a fair rematch. Utilizing his newfound endurance and sharp boxing skill, Percy cleanly defeats Jabe in front of the crowd. The victory marks Percy's complete transformation from a spoiled, weak youth into a tough, resilient young man.

XX → OLD FRIENDS

Resourcefulness converts vulnerable victims into victorious leaders

When Captain Brittler’s smuggling gang invades Tarpaulin Island, locking the crew in the cabin and smashing their radio, Percy takes the lead. Sneaking out a rear window, he swims through ice-cold sea water to the smugglers' vessel, unplugs the spark plugs, uncalks hull seams, and locks the ringleaders inside their own boat. Returning to shore, Percy and Jim ambush the remaining sentries, defeating the criminals and saving their season’s earnings.
