Rev. George Austen and Cassandra Leigh established their family at Steventon Rectory in Hampshire during the late eighteenth century. Country parish routines, family reading, and clerical duties shaped the household environment into which Jane was born in 1775. Quiet Hampshire geography and strong family ties formed the background for her early social observations.
Formal education at the Abbey School in Reading gave Jane Austen and her sister Cassandra brief experience of institutional life. George Austen's extensive personal library at Steventon provided far greater influence, offering access to classical literature, contemporary fiction, and history. Family theatricals performed in the parish barn encouraged creative expression and comedic performance among the siblings.
Between 1787 and 1793, Austen filled three manuscript notebooks with satires, burlesques, and comic plays known as the Juvenilia. Works like Love and Freindship mocked the melodramatic conventions and exaggerated sensibility of contemporary romantic novels. Private family audiences enjoyed these early pieces, which established her lifelong habit of keen social irony.
During the late 1790s, Austen composed initial versions of her most famous narratives at Steventon. An epistolary manuscript titled Elinor and Marianne eventually evolved into Sense and Sensibility, while First Impressions later became Pride and Prejudice. George Austen recognized his daughter's talent and attempted to submit First Impressions to a London publisher, though the manuscript was declined.
Rev. George Austen's decision to retire in 1800 forced the family to leave Steventon for Bath, ending a period of intense literary productivity. Moving between rented lodgings in Bath, followed by coastal visits to Lyme Regis, unsettled Austen's established writing routines. The unexpected death of her father in 1805 further compromised financial stability until the family ultimately settled at Chawton Cottage in 1809.
