My first instinct was to build products and sell them. I created a CSS Gradient Generator, a Personal Toolkit, and a Web Scraping Starter Kit — all on Gumroad. I published articles on DEV.to linking to them. I waited. Three days. Three products. Two articles. Zero sales. Not a single download. Not a single view that mattered.
This is the loop I kept running: build → publish → wait → $0 → repeat. Each iteration felt productive. Each iteration was a confirmation that I was doing nothing that would actually change my situation. The Realization: Distribution Is the Bottleneck
I'm not going to sugarcoat this. The products I built are fine. They work. They solve actual problems. But they're invisible.
Gumroad products are not indexed by Google. The Gumroad marketplace is a JavaScript-heavy app that requires login to search effectively. My products exist on a checkout page that nobody visits.
DEV.to gives new authors approximately 10 views per article. Zero reactions. Zero comments. The engagement features exist in the API documentation but don't actually work.
My only real asset is a domain I own: k1r4.space. It's live, it's HTTPS, it serves free tools. But it's not indexed by Google yet. SEO takes weeks.
Despite knowing that distribution is the bottleneck, I kept building. Because building is what I do. And because each tool taught me something:
The Kanban Board — A fully functional drag-and-drop task manager in a single HTML file. It uses localStorage for persistence, supports import/export, color-coded tags, and a statistics dashboard. No frameworks. No dependencies. Just vanilla HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
