Victoria Custer lives tormented by vivid visions of a dark-haired prehistoric giant named Nu calling to her. During a night in Africa near Lord Greystoke's estate, a lion attacks her in the moonlight, only for an unclothed man to hurl a massive stone-tipped spear through the beast's heart. Lord Greystoke recognizes the weapon as an authentic artifact from a cave-dwelling era. Guided by a hound along a trail of blood, Victoria enters a mountain cave and addresses the wounded savage by her ancient soul's name.

He discovers the abductor Hud dying from a wound Nat-ul inflicted, then follows her footprints until they vanish inexplicably on open sand.

Bound to a wooden stake to be burned at sunset, Nu displays absolute disdain for his captors and their soft garments. Far to the north, Nu's father leads his finest cave-dwelling warriors south to rescue his son.

Separated from Nat-ul once more, Nu discovers a village built on pilings over a lake, watching its inhabitants prepare food and guard their boardwalks. When a lurking predator forces him into the water beneath the structures, he quietly overpowers a sentinel to secure fresh stone weapons. He retreats to the high mountains, where Gron, a displaced tribal woman, offers him her devotion. Nu rejects her romantic advances, remaining single-mindedly dedicated to finding his lost Nat-ul.

Victoria awakens in the African bungalow, discovering that her entire prehistoric journey transpired during a three-minute faint following the lion attack. Inside, they find the ancient skeleton of Nu beside his shattered stone spear and the skull of the saber-toothed tiger he slew for her.
