Alceste loves Célimène despite her addiction to courtly gossip and salon flattery. When her aristocratic suitors Acaste and Clitandre gather, Célimène dissects every absent friend with razor satire to delight the room. Alceste condemns her cruelty, yet his affection binds him to the very woman whose shallow social games he despises.
Arsinoé arrives under the guise of friend and moral guardian to warn Célimène about rumors concerning her conduct. Célimène parries the advice by pointing out that extreme modesty often appears only when beauty fades. Rebuffed by the younger woman, Arsinoé turns her attention to Alceste, offering court influence and pious sympathy to win his favor.
