Prince Hamlet binds his companions Horatio and Marcellus to secrecy and decides to feign madness while measuring his next move. A lingering doubt remains over whether the spectre is an honest ghost or a damning spirit.

Polonius attributes Hamlet's erratic behavior to unrequited love for Ophelia, while Claudius imports Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to spy on the prince. Sensing betrayal on every side, Hamlet guards his mind behind riddle and mockery. The arrival of a traveling theater troupe gives him a precise method of testing the ghost's revelation. By having the actors perform a murder matching his father's demise, Hamlet intends to catch the conscience of the king.

In Denmark, grief drives Ophelia into mad despair and ultimate drowning, while her brother Laertes returns demanding blood. Claudius channels Laertes' rage into a rigged dueling contest using an anointed poison blade and a poisoned chalice as backup.

Holding the skull of the court jester Yorick, Hamlet confronts the absolute equalizer of death before discovering Ophelia's funeral. At the fencing match, treason collapses upon its architects: Gertrude unknowingly drinks the poisoned cup, while Laertes and Hamlet wound each other with the poisoned foil. Before succumbing to the venom, Hamlet strikes down Claudius and names Prince Fortinbras of Norway as heir, leaving Horatio to tell the story.
