Amid the cold mud of Blanc-Sablon in October 1914, French Lieutenant Raoul Vignerte leads his company into precarious trenches. Before departing Paris to tutor Prince Joachim of Lautenburg-Detmold, Vignerte receives a sharp warning from Professor Thierry to beware of Baron von Boose. Flush with sudden wealth, Vignerte plunges into a reckless night of dining and spending alongside Clotilde and Parisian companions. He boards the night train to Germany, blissfully unconcerned by the academic advice and completely blind to the trap awaiting him at court.

At the grand military review in Lautenburg, Grand Duchess Aurore commands attention as she rides her wild stallion Tarass-Bulba ahead of elite cavalry. Jealous Lieutenant von Hagen confronts Vignerte in the night garden just as a catastrophic fire engulfs the castle library and lab. Vignerte barely escapes his barred room before Professor Cyrus Beck dies in an explosion. The horror peaks when Aurore leads Vignerte into the woods under the guise of hunting birds and fires into the thicket, leaving Melusine von Graffenfried dead in a pool of blood.

As World War I erupts, Aurore drives Vignerte across the border in her high-speed Benz, bluffing past German commanders to deliver him to French outposts. She gives him a final kiss before returning alone to Lautenburg to confront the returning conspirator Boose.
